Sex has always been a closed door conversation, but thankfully things are changing. Most of us are comfortable about our sexuality and talking about it is not a biggie. We are also becoming more open about masturbation. And we have Bollywood flicks like Veere Di Wedding and web series Lust Stories to thank for that in part.
But keeping all the pleasure points aside (which are many, BTW) we want to focus your attention on the health benefits of masturbation. Shocked? Well, a 2017 study in The Journals of Gerontology states that masturbation is linked to better cognition i.e. better memory–especially as you age.
So, ladies it’s time to reach the big O. But before you do that, read up on these seven health benefits of masturbation.
1. Masturbation will bless you with good mood
Masturbation is a great mood booster. And the secret lies in the pleasure you get out of it. Dr Bhavana Barmi, a renowned clinical psychologist, says: “Masturbation releases dopamine and endorphins which kicks in the pleasure. Also, dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps in releasing stress and improves mood as well.” So, the next time stress knocks you out–you know what to do.
2. Masturbation is like meditation
You know how meditation keeps us calm and relieves stress. Well, masturbation has the same effect. After all, it does release stress. But the great thing also is that it’s a mindful act, as you have to concentrate on how you’re feeling in order to stimulate yourself to climax.
3. It can combat vaginal dryness
You might have heard that regular sex can help you tame vaginal dryness, thanks bodily juices that flow. Masturbation does the exact same thing. So yeah, get working ladies.
4. Masturbation is a great way to orgasm minus the risk of infections
Think of masturbation like a vaginal detox–because when you’re aroused, the cervix pushes out any impurities to keep infections at bay. Not to mention, you get to enjoy the pleasure minus the friction, risk of STIs and pregnancy.
5. Masturbation helps beat insomnia
According to a Cleveland Clinic research, after you orgasm (whether you sex or masturbate) you experience muscle spasms, increased heart rate, and breathing which causes fatigue and gives you a good night’s sleep.
6. Masturbation helps in improving your immunity too
This happens due to a spike in the production of lymphocytes or white blood cells (WBCs). More WBCs in your body means better immunity. A study published in NeuroImmunoModulation actually conducted an experiment to ratify this logic. The researchers were amazed to see the level of these immunity boosting cells within five minutes of climax.
So, let’s bid those dry spells a goodbye because your big-AH moment can actually be good for your health.
