Positivity is the way to be, whether it’s about your mental state or even sex. The reason we mention sex is, because in a country like India, the ‘S’ word has always been considered a taboo, and has been stigmatised for generations. Even if people enjoy sexual content on the internet, they look down upon anyone who comes forward in reality to say they enjoy wild times between the sheets.
And that’s exactly where sex positivity steps in! But, what does it really mean?
Being sex-positive is all about being honest, open and accepting of everyone’s consensual sexual lifestyle. It is about doing away with the concept that one kind of sex practice is better or worse than tthe other.
Although it might take some time to ‘learn’ and ‘unlearn’ these concepts, how about making a start today? So without further ado, let’s understand how you can be more sex positive.
It’s natural that you can’t change in a day’s time, that’s why the first step is to educate yourself. Read up on racism, feminism, ageism and related concepts to critically develop your thinking, and then understand the environment around us.
The literature available around all these ideas and concepts will open your mind, and make you more accepting of things around you. It does take a while to break habits that we’ve grown up with! So take your time, and educate yourself to break free from this vicious cycle of judgments and puritanical ideas.
We’ve always been taught that sexuality is something that’s not “good” or “wrong”, and if someone is comfortable with it, they are labeled “brash”. Well, that’s what needs to change.
Instead of leaning on media or porn, or any such medium—take some time out to understand what sexuality really means to you, what are your desires, and what is your emotional and spiritual response to these ideas?
You need to also assess if your sex life is impacting other areas of your life. These are pertinent questions that need answers. So, dig deep into your mind, one day at a time!
Especially when it comes to anything about sex, it is important to communicate, and communicate clearly. The one thing that’s important is consent, and forms one of the most basic tenets of sex positivity.
If you have certain sexual desires in mind, you should be able to communicate with your partner/s openly without feeling ashamed at all. As long as you are consensually comfortable with a person!
You might think of a certain sexual practice as ‘strange’ or ‘weird’, just because you don’t like it. Try to be more accepting of what others think, as long as it’s consensual. It really doesn’t matter what others think, it’s none of your business. Once you become more accepting and understand that other’s needs are their own, you will move closer to being more sex-positive.
