We all know the kiwi fruit. This tangy delight is not just a delicious fruit but a wondrous superfood full of nutrients, antioxidants and fibre.

As per a research published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, kiwi is packed with vitamins A and E along with minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and manganese. It also contains good amounts of vitamin B6.

If that’s not enough, then read this: one cup of sliced kiwi (about two medium fruits) also contains more than an adequate daily recommended amount of vitamin C—which is important for the growth and repair of tissues in each part of the body. The fibre in kiwi is known to improve bowel function and help prevent constipation.

While there is no dearth of reasons to include this magical fruit in your diet, we present to you five reasons why you should relish this fruit:

1. It helps in managing asthma
Kiwi contains a large amount of vitamin C and antioxidants that have a beneficial effect on lung function. Vitamin C has been found to reduce wheezing and other respiratory problems in asthma patients as the high vitamin C content in kiwi helps reduce inflammation caused by allergic reactions in the respiratory system and improve the function of immune cells in the blood.

2. Weight management
This high fibre and low-calorie combination prevalent in kiwi is ideal for weight management. A medium-sized kiwi contains around 50 calories and the fiber content creates a sense of fullness in the stomach.

3. Digestion
Kiwis are a rich source of fibre that works brilliantly for digestion. This fruit also contains a proteolytic enzyme called actinidin that helps break down proteins. The fiber, in fact, also eases constipation issues as fibre has a natural laxative effect on the digestive system.

4. Immunity
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient when it comes to boosting the immune system to ward off diseases. As per a study published by the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, kiwi fruit supports immune function and reduces the likelihood of developing cold and flu.

Moreover, vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant that eliminates free radicals that could cause inflammation or cancer. Even when it comes to vision loss induced by macular degeneration, kiwis can help protect the eyes as it contains high levels of zeaxanthin and lutein, which are known to manage the vision loss by reducing the degree of degeneration.

5. Sleep
The sleep-promoting effects of kiwis can be attributed to serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical that helps regulate your sleep cycle. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory antioxidants in kiwis, such as vitamin C and carotenoids are also responsible for inducing sleep-promoting effects.

So, make sure you include this tangy fruit on your plate regularly to get healthy!
