Just like the heat wave, cold wave is equally harsh on our health and skin. We can visibly notice the changing texture of our skin as we transition from the summer season to cold winter season. It goes without saying that our winter skincare is distinct from summer skincare because our skin tends to lose its moisture content in winter and dries out faster. So, locking in hydration in the skin is a special focus in our skincare routine. Additionally, exposure to the hot air of heaters and blowers in winter leads to skin breakage. Less moisture levels in the air also cause the skin to become dry and tight. Reading all of this must make you nervous about changing weather skincare. But, here we have come to your rescue to tell you about how to prepare your skin for weather change.

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Kuna Ramdas, Senior Dermatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad, to understand how to prepare your skin for weather change.

How to prepare your skin for weather change?

The changing seasons can impact your skin significantly. Whether you’re transitioning from a hot summer to a crisp fall, or bracing for the cold of winter, it is essential to adapt your skincare routine to meet the unique challenges posed by the weather. As the environment shifts, so should your approach to skincare to maintain a healthy and radiant complexion.

1. Hydration is the key

With the shift in weather, humidity levels fluctuate, affecting the skin’s moisture balance. In colder months, the air tends to be drier, leading to increased water loss from the skin.

“To combat this, incorporate a rich, hydrating moisturizer into your routine. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to lock in moisture,” suggests the expert.

2. Use sunscreen every day

Regardless of the season, sun protection is non-negotiable. Even during the fall and winter months, harmful UV rays can cause damage to your skin. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that has at least SPF 30 and apply it generously, especially on exposed areas like your face, neck and hands.

3. Adjust cleansing habits

As the weather changes, so should your cleansing routine, suggests Dr Ramdas. In warmer months, you might require a lighter cleanser to manage increased oil production. In colder months, consider using a gentler, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping the skin of essential oils.

4. Exfoliate wisely

Exfoliation helps in the removal of dead skin cells, promoting a healthy glow. However, excessive exfoliation can lead to irritation, especially during weather transitions. Choose a gentle exfoliant and use it once or twice a week to maintain skin clarity without causing harm.

5. Switch to a humidifier

“Heating systems during colder months can contribute to dry indoor air, which can be harsh on the skin. Using a humidifier helps add moisture back into the air, preventing your skin from becoming overly dry and irritated,” says the expert.

6. Stay hydrated from within

Remember that skincare isn’t only about what you apply topically. It is also about what you consume. Stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water, and include foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, to support your skin’s health.

Preparing your skin for weather changes is a holistic approach that involves adapting your skincare routine to the unique challenges posed by each season. By following these tips and listening to your skin’s needs, you can ensure that your skin remains healthy, radiant, and well-protected throughout the year.
