The holiday season is synonymous with unlimited joy and happiness, allowing us that much-needed break. But for some, a holiday is all about a break from physical activities and indulging in delicious food. The result is weight gain! You can be mindful of certain things and follow some tips to avoid holiday weight gain.
Here are some tips to enjoy your Christmas and New Year break while avoiding holiday weight gain.
We know you are only meant to enjoy your vacation by ditching your usual routine and trying out different things. But that doesn’t mean you can’t stay active on a vacation. When exploring places on vacation, try to do it on foot as much as possible. Make it a point to discover everything on the go while walking so that at least you are able to hit your daily steps goal, says fitness expert Spoorthi S.
Just because there is a drastic shift from your usual routine, it doesn’t mean that your workout routine has to be abandoned. Try to squeeze in some time for fitness even if it is a 30-minute session. “If there are no weights available, do body-weight exercises,” says the expert.
Unlike weights, resistance bands are easy to carry around. They help to stay active by letting you explore everything from squats and rows to extensions and curls.
You don’t have to say no to enjoying all the good food during the vacation. Balance is the key. So, keep the majority of my meals healthy, but make room for indulgences too! “Make smart choices and swap unhealthy food items for healthier options like salads. You can always add protein sources to every meal to make sure your food consumption is healthy,” says Spoorthi S.
We tend to overindulge when we’re hungry. How about pocketing a few nuts or fruit too much in between meals instead? This way you can avoid holiday weight gain.
If you’re travelling or just eating outside, searching eateries around you helps to identify healthier options and make better choices. You have all the information available at the click of a button, so make good use of it.

You can include plans that require movement — like trekking! It’s a fun and adventurous way to stay active.
Carry a bottle with you at all times and make sure you’re sipping water frequently. Having juices can help too!
Try including more protein-rich foods in your diet to feel full and satiated. Not just that, it will also help you with better metabolism.
“Alcohol can be a deal breaker for those who are trying to lose weight, or just not gain any additional weight. Since it consists of empty calories, it can be quite difficult to burn it off,” says the expert.
While the holidays might have caused you to take a backseat, it doesn’t have to hold you back too. Don’t stress on the indulgence that may have happened. Instead, focus on restarting your healthy habits.
