Constipation can make different things happen to different people. Some may find it harder to lose weight, some may feel a nagging headache or it may even manifest as recurring acne. Constipation is a condition when bowel motions are uncomfortable or infrequent. In addition to being an indication of many diseases, constipation can also indicate an Agni that is out of balance, says Ayurveda expert Dr Rekha Radhamony.
It’s not advisable for gut health to go on without bowel motions for even one day. Our stools also contain wastes from physiological processes such as stercobilin, bacteria, dead cells, et al, in addition to wastes from our meals. A portion of these gets reabsorbed if you don’t poop every day, which leads to toxin accumulation.

Eat 5 to 6 prunes soaked in the morning. Drink the water it is soaked in as well. According to multiple studies, prunes or dried plums are good to soften stool consistently.
Hydrate yourself well as there is no substitute for water. Experts usually recommend 7-8 glasses of water intake everyday. It’s also because lower fluid intake and intestinal constipation, which can lead to other health issues.
Regular exercise is extremely crucial for your gut health. Exercise keeps the activity kicking in the colon, and so avoiding a sedentary lifestyle at any age and stage of life is essential. You can also try yoga asanas for gut health.
Include healthy fats such as ghee in your diet. Try having warm milk with a half teaspoon of castor oil or ghee, suggests the expert. Ghee is a natural lubricant. and supports clearing of the intestines.
Dr Radhamony says dry ginger or shunthi is a moderate laxative, Her advise is to sip some warm dry ginger water in the morning.
Apart from these suggestions, also remember that your dietary intake is key to your gut health. Make sure you have enough fiber and natural stool softeners.
