Premature babies are infants born nearly three weeks earlier than their estimated delivery. Newborns do not get enough time in their mother’s womb to develop properly, which makes them vulnerable to experiencing health issues such as apnea, respiratory stress disorder, jaundice, anemia, etc. Such babies require intensive care and support. Let’s take a look at how to take care of your premature baby to ensure they stay healthy.

5 tips to take care of a premature baby

Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you are bringing your premature baby home:

1. Having a positive environment

Taking care of your baby at home can be overwhelming. You will have to make proper arrangements and make changes to your home. The most important thing you have to ensure here is that you create a peaceful and positive environment around your baby so that she or he can sleep well!

2. Nursing your premature child

Do not skip breastfeeding, as it plays a crucial role in the growth and development of your baby and cannot be replaced by any synthetic formula milk. Feeding a premature baby can be tough, as such babies face problems during latching or sucking. But, you have to make some more effort in order to feed them as it is necessary for them. If your baby is too young to breastfeed, it is advised that you start expressing your milk eight to ten times a day and once at night to maintain proper milk production.

3. Continue holding your premature infant close to your skin

This has proven to be a beneficial activity for both the parents and the infant. Putting your baby in a nappy and letting him or her lay on your chest underneath your shirt or a blanket so that they are securely fastened to your body can help. This eases any discomfort or stress your child may be experiencing. Additionally, it encourages healthy weight gain, establishment of good milk supply, and facilitates your baby’s adjustment to its new environment.

4. Pay close attention to your infant’s sleep patterns

Your preterm infant should get enough sleep throughout the day, as this is required for growth and development. Make sure your infant is always sleeping on his or her back, never on the stomach. Also, the bed should not be hard, flat, or free of any pillows.

5. Minimise visits outdoors

It is advisable to make sure your infant spends the first few weeks following delivery at home, as the change in environment can be risky for your child. The exception is a doctor’s visit, which you should go to frequently.

Takeaway

Having a premature baby comes with a lot of responsibilities for parents and sometimes handling a lot of things at once can be overwhelming. In such cases, you should seek valid suggestions and needed support. Ask your doctor, what can be done for the better recovery of your baby.
