You’ve probably come across chamomile multiple times! After all, the herb has beautiful daisy-like white flowers. The aroma of chamomile is often something that makes it a favourite amongst tea connoisseurs.

What many don’t realize is that chamomile can have several health benefits. Regular consumption of chamomile won’t just improve your physical health but can also positively impact your mental well-being. Yes, sipping on chamomile tea can actually improve your mental health.

To brew the tea, chamomile flowers are first dried. You can do this at home, or you can purchase chamomile tea from the market. The dried flowers are then brewed with water to make a cup of chamomile tea. Add honey to this and you’ll have in front of you what can be defined as comfort in a cup!

Here are 3 wonderful ways in which chamomile tea can benefit your mental health

1. Reduces anxiety around the time of menstruation
Around the time we start our period and during those few days, we may experience our anxiety levels rising. Experts often attribute it to hormonal changes but nonetheless, it can disrupt our day. There’s research published in the Iranian Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility that observes that drinking chamomile tea can reduce anxiety experienced close to, or during periods.

The same research also noted that chamomile tea can relieve menstrual cramps! Menstrual cramps can cause severe discomfort and interfere with mobility. Hence, you need to make an active effort to soothe yourself. The research shows that consuming chamomile tea can reduce menstrual cramps and provide relief to women who are being visited by Aunt Flo.

2. Aids sleep
If you’ve been having trouble falling asleep, you might want to brew yourself a cup of chamomile tea before hitting the bed. According to research published on J-STAGE, an online platform for Japanese academic journals, chamomile tea can effectively aid in inducing sleep. Experts credit the presence of apigenin, an antioxidant, which is known to promote sleep and reduce insomnia.

3. Reduces stress
Stress can lead to excessive worrying, severe nervousness and a loss of focus. But, it is also important to acknowledge that there are multiple sources of stress that we must deal with on a daily basis. According to a study published in the journal PubMed Central, chamomile can play a role in reducing feelings of stress and help you relax after a long day.
