Burnout is something that most people do not even recognize in their life. It kills someone slowly by stealing the enjoyment from their life, giving them a hopeless, exhausted, and crazy life!
When you burn out, it takes away your power to function effectively and efficiently and in that case, tasks that would usually be small may feel a burden.
In simple words, according to Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, burnout is feeling depleted and under constant stress for a long time. Burnout happens slowly and sometimes the symptoms are difficult to recognize. Different people will tell different things about the feeling of burnout, but one thing they all agree to is that there are never any good days.
Signs of burnout
Burnout is different from stress. It is a constant feeling of stress, exhaustion, helplessness, and general sadness. The effects of burnout can be seen in the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of life.
The common signs of burnout are:
1. You are just not interested or excited about work or your family life and feel without a goal.
2. You have stopped putting in the effort in anything and have become forgetful,says Dr Kapoor.
3. You may notice yourself avoiding your own basic needs such as personal hygiene, feeding, clothing, or any medical needs.
4. You are totally exhausted, and even mundane activities like brushing your teeth seem like a gigantic task, says Dr Kapoor.
5. You may also experience unexplained exhaustion, irritability, numbness and low frustration tolerance.
6. You can randomly feel so overwhelmed with life and you may also break down and cry.
7. You are suffering from various issues like sleeplessness, headaches, breakouts on the skin, hair fall, chest pain, palpitations, gastrointestinal issues, muscle tension, etc.
“The first step to dealing with burnout is recognizing the symptoms and consulting a good doctor for the same. Remember that burnout is much more than stress and should not be confused with mental illness,” says Dr Kapoor.
How to deal with burnout:
1. Lighten your load right away
Delegate your work, talk to your boss and people at home, and request for some lighter load of work.
2. Talk to other people
When everything seems impossible and bleak, then social contact can be the saving grace. Talking helps calm the nerves and is sometimes therapeutic as well. Reach out to the people closest to you who will listen without expressing judgment.
3. Set boundaries
Keep affirming that you don’t have to please everyone. Done overexert and learn to say ‘no’ politely but firmly.
4. Make workout an everyday priority
It may seem pointless at the start but do some workout every day. Start with 30 minutes a day and indulge in rhythmic exercise, focusing on your body.
Burnout can have a long lasting effect on your health and therefore the sooner you get out of it, the better it is for your skin, hair, body, and mental health.
