The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located on your neck on the front lower side. When there is an imbalance in the thyroid hormones, the thyroid gland malfunctions leading to various problems.
Thyroid disorders can be either because of overactive or under-active functioning of the gland, thus resulting in abnormal release of the thyroid hormones. This can lead to a lot of symptoms such as changes in your weight, high cholesterol, menstrual issues, skin and hair problems, lowered metabolism, and tiredness—amongst other things.
But fret not! Rather, follow these five tips to keep thyroid disorders:
1. Avoid stress
Stress interferes with the proper functioning of the thyroid. Activities like yoga and meditation is helpful in reducing stress. Reduce caffeine consumption as caffeine can stress adrenal levels which may negatively affect your thyroid. Keep your consumption down to 1-2 cups per day. You may also consult with a doctor to help manage stress better.
2. Exercise regularly
Exercise is extremely important to take care of a healthy thyroid. You may take a brisk walk or a jog in your nearby park to take care of weight in hypothyroidism. You may also try aerobic exercises like swimming, cycling, hiking, and dancing to take care of a healthy thyroid.
3. Say no to alcohol and smoking
Avoid alcohol because it interferes with the function of the thyroid and because it may react with thyroid-related medication. Cigarette smoke has a variety of toxins that may affect your thyroid. Smoking tends to elevate thyroxine (T4) levels and a slight decrease in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.
4. Adequate rest
Thyroid problems can cause fatigue, and thus proper rest is important to remain healthy. Attempt to go to bed early and rise early, it is recommended to get at least eight hours of undisturbed sleep.
5. Eat mindfully
Thyroid issues can affect metabolism and make body functioning sluggish or hyperactive leading to digestive issues. One needs to eat nutritious and balance meals and be mindful of the same
