Do your ageing parents refuse to listen to logic? These 5 tips will help you deal
It might be hard for you as a child to see your parents grow old, but that’s not all. As they age, their behaviour and the way they act can also change. And if your parents have started behaving in a different and more childish way, then it’s time to make peace with the fact that it is a part of growing old.
If they throw tantrums, don’t know how to deal with their own emotions, and continuously seek your attention, then they might be emotionally hungry and need validation. Get into the role of a real adult and act like one to understand, and help them better.
We know it can get tiring sometimes, so here are five tips that you should always remember to manage this situation better.
1. Be more observant
Observe what they are doing and most importantly, why they are doing it. Then try to engage them with something that will keep them occupied and they will really enjoy.
2. Let them express themselves
We know, sometimes it might get irritating for you to deal with their lame talks or demands, but let them speak and express themselves. If you are not patient enough, they might get more distant and cranky, and that might be a real task for you to handle. Instead, sit down with them and listen to what they have to say, this way you might learn to better understand their behaviour.
3. Focus on the relationship
No matter how they behave, in the end, they are your parents. So, try focusing on that, even if they are emotionally immature. Instead, think about the specific outcome you want, and how you can improve your relationship with them.
4. Communicate assertively
If your parents are behaving childishly, they might also try to manipulate you. So, whatever communication you have with them, try and do it more assertively and not aggressively. This will be a more respectful way to show that you are listening, but not agreeing to everything that they demand.

5. Manage and engage
