Dry and frizzy hair are a natural side effect of winter time! Using chemical-laden hair products may not always work in your favour. So, try some homemade hair marks for dry hair to settle the fuss with a melange of natural ingredients!

Why does hair become dry and frizzy in the winter?

During winter, hair tends to become dry and frizzy due to several factors. The cold air holds less moisture, which can leave your hair dehydrated and strip the natural oil from your hair. Indoor heating exacerbates the issue by further drying out the hair and sapping moisture from your hair strands. Additionally, hot showers, a common comfort in winter, can contribute to the problem by stripping away the hair’s protective oils, making it more prone to dryness. To combat winter-induced dryness and frizz, it is crucial to maintain proper hydration and consider protective styles to shield your hair from the harsh elements.

5 homemade hair masks for dry hair

To help you know the right way to use these hair masks, Health Shots got in touch with renowned and certified skin and cosmetic specialist Dr Kiran Sethi. Here are 5 DIY hair masks and how to use them:

1. Avocado hair mask

This mask combines the nourishing properties of avocado with the humectant effects of honey. Avocado’s natural oils deeply moisturize dry hair, while honey locks in that moisture, leaving your locks soft, shiny, and rejuvenated.

Mash one ripe avocado and mix it with two tablespoons of honey. Apply the mixture to damp hair, ensuring even distribution from roots to ends. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. It will hydrate and restore the shine of your hair.

2. Egg hair mask

Packed with protein, the egg in this mask strengthens hair, reducing frizz and promoting overall health. Yogurt, a natural conditioner, adds moisture, leaving your hair smooth and manageable.

Whisk one egg and mix it with half a cup of plain yogurt. Apply the mixture to clean, damp hair, leaving it on for 20–30 minutes. Rinse with cool water to prevent the egg from cooking. This mask will not only moisturize your hair but also strengthen it, leaving you with smoother and more manageable locks.

5. Aloe vera mask

Aloe vera is known for its soothing antibacterial properties. When mixed with olive oil, it effectively softens and moisturizes dry, frizzy hair, leaving it looking sleek, manageable, and revitalized.

Mix three tablespoons of olive oil with two tablespoons of fresh aloe vera gel. Massage the blend into your hair and scalp, ensuring even coverage. Let it sit for 30 minutes before washing it out. This hair mask can also calm an irritated scalp and promote hair health.

Apart from these homemade hair masks, Dr Kiran Sethi suggests using a diluted vinegar rinse for additional benefits. She said a diluted vinegar rinse, such as apple cider vinegar (ACV), offers multiple benefits for dry and frizzy hair. It helps balance the hair’s pH, closes the cuticles, and imparts a smooth, shiny finish. Additionally, the acidic nature of the vinegar removes product buildup, reducing the risk of dandruff. Incorporating this rinse into your routine will not only reduce frizz, but it will also leave your locks looking revitalized and well-nourished.
