If you think haldi only adds a tint and flavour to your food, you’ve probably been living under a rock! This bright yellow-orange spice is commonly used in all Indian households and has a permanent space on your kitchen sill. Even in Ayurveda, this spice has been used for its medicinal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties for thousands of years.

Over the years, turmeric has gained popularity among health watchers. While India has been enjoying the benefits of this wonderful spice for long, the Western world started singing turmeric’s praises comparatively late. Turmeric goes in almost every curry and savoury dish that is cooked in your kitchen as it helps brighten up the food and also adds nutritional value to it. But the qualities of this wonder spice don’t end here.

As per a study published in the Journal of General Virology, curcumin can prevent an alpha-group coronavirus that infects pigs called Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) – from infecting cells. Upon increased consumption, this compound is also said to kill virus particles.

The research suggests that curcumin affects TGEV by directly killing the virus before it infects the cell. It also integrates with the viral envelope to ‘inactivate’ the virus, and alters the metabolism of cells to prevent viral entry. That’s what we call a turmeric-activated defense against Covid-19 too!

Well, there is nobody who can deny the myriad of health benefits of turmeric. Pooja Makhija, celebrity utritionist, joined the turmeric fan club recently by sharing a video on her Instagram handle. Igniting our faith in the healing and immunity boosting powers of turmeric, she shared a video of a carrot and raw turmeric shot recipe.

In her video, she is seen dropping 5-6 inch long pieces of fresh raw and peeled turmeric in a blender. She follows it by adding 2 carrots in the blender too. Grinding it to a juice-like consistency, she pours this orange immunity tonic in a fancy shot glass and sipped it with style!

Showing off her turmeric stained hands, she captioned the video, “Punch every disease in the face! Your kitchen is your best pharmacy, especially our Indian kitchen and its hidden ancient ingredients.”
