That’s the thing about mothers: they are so versatile, they take no time to slip into different roles. A friend in times of need, an advisor in times of confusion, a pillar in times of need for emotional support, and a–tyrant after dinner.
The tyrant part may sound a bit absurd, but it’s truer than any universal truth in my case. Perhaps, it’s all the extra energy from the food that turns my mother into Hitler, who harasses me into sitting in the vajrasana pose minutes after consuming lunch, dinner, or whatever meal I have the “fortune” of sharing with her.
To be honest, I prefer making the annoying effort of getting into the pose than listening to her constant nagging.
But this escapism has been working in my favour
As much as I hate to say this, I have had a long-standing relationship with constipation. It has come and gone, but never left me alone for too long. All this, until mom’s beloved vajrasana came into my life and changed it forever.
At the risk of making this sound like a commercial, I’d like to reinstate that sitting in vajrasana after dinner every night (not after lunch because I am in office then) has helped me keep constipation at bay.
Yes, mom’s right again
When it comes to being punished for taking mom’s advice lightly, the embarrassment of being proven wrong by her and well—science—isn’t enough as this particular claim is backed by yoga experts and Ayurveda along with modern scientific research .
A 2004 study published in the journal Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback found that two months of practicing vajrasana regularly significantly decreased the irritable bowel syndrome in the participants of the research.
In fact, Ayurveda and yoga experts all over the world consider this pose as the holy grail of digestive health and recommend practicing it for at least five minutes after eating a meal.
Doing so can increase the blood flow to the lower body and lead to your digestive system becoming more efficient. It, thus prevents problems like bloating, acidity, indigestion, and constipation.
A 2014 research in which participants were made to pray in vajrasana after dinner too reported improved digestion. Additionally, according to a 2012 study, it can even help relieve lower back pain.
