Certain physical characteristics of the throat and airways can contribute to snoring. For example, a low, thick, or elongated soft palate, enlarged tonsils or adenoids.
Excess body weight, especially around the neck and throat area, can narrow the airways and cause snoring.
Snoring is more likely to occur as people age because their throat muscles tend to get weaker and lose their tone.
Alcohol loosens the throat muscles, which can cause the airway to narrow and lead to snoring.
Allergies, sinus infections or a deviated septum are examples of conditions that cause nasal congestion, which can obstruct the airway and contribute to snoring.
Sleeping on your back can cause the tongue and soft palate to collapse back into the throat, narrowing the airway and resulting in snoring.
Snoring can be caused by smoking because it irritates the mucous membranes in the nose and throat, causing swelling and congestion.
Certain medications such as sedatives or muscle relaxants, can relax the muscles in the throat and might cause snoring.
