Unfortunately, an unhealthy lifestyle is becoming extremely prevalent today. Nowadays, our hectic schedules leave no space for physical activities, meditation, or healthy meals, essential for healthy living. The negligent attitude toward health has given rise to many issues like hypertension. At a young age, this health issue hampers various essential body functions like breathing, digestion, blood flow, and heart rate. On World Hypertension Day, let’s find out a solution to treat hypertension.

What is hypertension?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the blood pressure that is higher than usual. Hypertension is blood pressure above 140/90, and it is considered severe, if the pressure goes above 180/120.

Causes of hypertension?

An unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, too much consumption of salt, lack of physical activity, not eating fruits and vegetables, drinking too much alcohol and caffeine, smoking, not getting enough sleep, and age are the most common causes of hypertension.

Symptoms of hypertension

Symptoms include early morning headaches, nose bleeding, irregular heart rhythms, vision impairments, and buzzing in the ears, to name a few. Severe hypertension can lead to fatigue, nausea, vomiting, confusion, anxiety, chest pain, and muscle tremors.

Hypertension negatively impacts most of the body’s functions, and it also has a severe effect on fertility. People with hypertension face problems related to fertility. High blood pressure affects the fertility in males and females, making it difficult to conceive. Chronic hypertension can cause poor egg quality among females. Hypertensive women also suffer from obesity, which is primarily a consequence of excessive estrogen production, which can lead to infertility. These risk factors make the need to treat hypertension more necessary.

Not only this, but hypertension also increases the risk of complications for the mother and the baby during pregnancy. High blood pressure makes people vulnerable to various risks during pregnancy, including insufficient blood flow to the placenta. Suppose the placenta cannot receive enough blood. In that case, the baby might not be able to obtain sufficient oxygen and nutrients required for its growth. This can cause slow growth known as intrauterine growth restriction, premature birth, or low birth weight.

How to treat hypertension?

Since hypertension is a lifestyle disease, it is essential to bring some lifestyle changes to prevent this health problem.

  1. Always monitor and keep your blood pressure in check.
  2. Ensure that you eat a clean and healthy diet.
  3. Make time for regular exercise. Take up yoga classes or join a gym for help.
  4. Keep your weight in the healthier bracket. Lose weight if you’re on the verge of obesity.
  5. Cut back or quit smoking and drinking.
