You don’t sit back and think about liver failure in your free time because most think that liver disease only affects older people. However, that’s not the case. Liver diseases can affect anyone at any point in time. In fact, liver disease is believed to be one of the most common diseases that affect people in India. The most common of these diseases is fatty liver disease, which is sometimes referred to as a “silent liver disease.” This is because it does not show any prominent symptoms.

However, there are some changes that may occur in your body that mean that your liver is not as healthy as you think.

Reasons why your liver health is important

Integrative nutritionist and health coach Neha Ranglani took to her Instagram account to share some symptoms that indicate that your liver is not in the best condition. She writes, “If you are facing any of these issues, it’s time you take your liver health seriously because it is one of the largest and most important organs in the body.”

Calling it the “gatekeeper” of the body, she further explains that this organ absorbs and filters everything you eat or drink. “The liver’s filtration process retains the nutrients that the body needs and disposes of the wastes, toxins, and excess substances that the body does not need or could harm the body,” reads the caption.

Your liver also helps metabolize fats, carbohydrates and proteins in your body. It is responsible to balance your hormones and help improve digestion.

Different types of liver disease

As per multiple medical organisations, there are several different types of liver disease that can affect you.

  • Autoimmune liver diseases: Primary bilary cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis occur when your immune system attacks the liver.
  • Hepatitis: Hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C can occur due to viral infections.
  • Hereditary liver diseases: Wilson disease and hemochromatosis can develop if these liver diseases run in your family.
  • Liver cancer: When abnormal cells proliferate in your liver, it may lead to malignant or benign liver cancer.
  • Fatty liver disease: Too many toxins and fats in your body can also lead to alcohol-related fatty liver or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
