The rainy season feels romantic and relaxing for some, and sticky and unhygienic for others. It’s also the season of diseases and eye infections. And so, following certain basic monsoon eye care tips becomes imperative.

While this season increases your likelihood to catch skin problems and allergies, eye infections also become common as the air gets filled with bacteria and virus. Eye-related issues such as redness, burning sensation, and swelling become rampant.

To protect your eyes, you must take some precautionary measures this rainy season.

Here are 10 monsoon eye care tips you need to follow:

1. Wear sunglasses

Try to wear your sunglasses or protective spectacles when you step outside to avoid direct contact with splashing of rainy water in monsoons.

2. Avoid touching your eyes without washing your hands

In rainy season, try and avoid touching your eyes because no matter what there could be a possibility that you shook hands with someone who was infected especially viral infection or came in contact with an infected object and then touching your eyes would mean infecting them.

3. Be careful around infected places and things

Swimming pools and water parks are known to be the breeding grounds for bacteria and infection since the water is shared by a lot of people. In rainy season, it is a good idea to skip the pool altogether, and especially if an eye infection is in the season.

4. Be careful while choosing eye make-up

Rain creates soggy and moist conditions indoors and outdoors. So, be sure to store your make-up in a dry place. A dry and cool place helps avoid infections and unnecessary bacteria that could cause damage to your products and skin. It’s best to wash your brush applicators before and after every use as it can transfer microorganisms into a product in the rainy season.

5. Do regular eye check-ups

An important aspect of preventing eye infections among children is to schedule regular eye examinations and checkups every year with your ophthalmologist.

6. Avoid sharing towels and napkins

Eye infections are communicable.So, sharing personal hygiene items such as handkerchiefs, towels and napkins can be a reason for transmission of infectious bacteria and virus from the carrier to others.

7. Keep your eyes safe from wind and dust storms

In the rainy season, dust storms can be inevitable and also unpredictable sometimes. Protect your eyes because strong winds, and any dust particles in your eyes can cause irritation and infection. It may even give you itchy eyes. It’s best to take precautions to bar the entry of dust particles into your eyes.

8. Try to avoid wearing contact lenses

Contact lenses can cause extreme infections, especially if kept in unhygienic condition or unclean fluid, and can result in redness and irritation. Sometimes, even severe corneal infection and loss of vision, Keep your contacts clean and keep changing the fluid of contact lenses frequently

9. Avoid waterlogged areas

Waterlogged areas contain a lot of viruses, bacteria and fungus that can transfer and cause harm. Especially if water from these stagnant area accidentally splashes into the eyes

10. Use of medication

If an eye infection occurs, avoid using off the shelf medication from chemist without prescription as some medicines may cause aggravated symptoms or cause blindness, always consult an ophthalmologist for medication.
