Who doesn’t want pearly white teeth? Not only are they a sign of good oral health but can really add to the aesthetic! Our teeth, however, tend to become yellow in appearance as we age but there are several other reasons as well, ranging from poor dental hygiene, smoking, genes, and consumption of caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea.

If you can’t visit your dentist for a session of teeth whitening, we’ve got you 5 effective home remedies to polish up your teeth:

1. Apple cider vinegar

Great for your hair and health, apple cider vinegar can also be used to whiten your teeth. Research published in the Journal of Sichuan University found that apple cider vinegar has a bleaching effect on cow teeth.

So, you can make a mouthwash by mixing 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in about 200ml of water. Wash all the corners of your mouth with this mouthwash for 30 seconds. However, since it has a bleaching effect on your teeth, you need to make sure that you dilute it before use and don’t keep it in your mouth for a very long period of time.

2. Fruit peels

Peels of certain fruits like lemon, orange, and banana are rich in vitamin C and a compound called d-limonene. These two elements are believed to whiten your teeth naturally! Moreover, a study published in the American Journal of Dentistry noted the positive effect of a toothpaste that has 5 per cent d-limonene in removing teeth stains. People who brushed with that toothpaste daily noticed that their tooth stains had reduced in appearance quite significantly.

Another study published in the Journal of Physics studied the whitening effects of citric acid extracts on one’s teeth. They noted achieving the best results with tangerine peel.

You do need to be careful with the peels as they are acidic in nature and can erode the enamel, making your teeth more sensitive and damaged.

3. Oil pulling

Oil pulling is a method where you need to use coconut oil as a mouthwash. A 2015 study also found that oil pulling can be beneficial in removing plaque buildup from the teeth which contributes to the yellowing.

4. Baking soda

This is one of the most effective ways to remove the yellow stains from your teeth! Research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association also found baking soda to be a safe way to whiten teeth. Moreover, it is also believed to fight off bacteria, reducing plaque.
