You might feel perpetually bloated and puffed up, especially in the abdominal area, arms and your legs. Sometimes, it happens when you’re menstruating or expecting a baby. But if that’s not the case with you, then it’s time to take action and lose excess water weight.

Here are five simple tips and tricks that’ll help you:

1. Reduce sodium intake
One of the easiest ways to shed water weight is to reduce sodium intake. Sodium balances the fluids in your body, but too much of it can cause water retention! A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation confirms that an increase in sodium intake causes your body to hold on to fluids.

Foods such as salt, cheese, bread, and frozen foods are loaded with sodium, and should be consumed in moderation. Instead, switch to low-sodium foods like bananas, nuts, seeds and leafy vegetables.

2. Get proper sleep
Just how exercise and diet are important to lose the extra weight, so is sleep. Being sleep-deprived might affect your sympathetic renal nerves located in the kidneys. These are critical to regulate sodium, and maintain water balance. Moreover, adequate sleep also helps your body to balance the hydration levels, and minimises water retention.

3. Stay hydrated
Water improves the functioning of your kidney, and flushes out excess water and sodium out of your system. Moreover, when you are hydrated, your body doesn’t hold on to extra water, that’s exactly why they say drink 6-8 glasses of water every day!

4. Reduce stress
Stress causes hormonal imbalance in your body by releasing cortisol, and that’s not good news! If your cortisol levels rise, so do levels of antidiuretic hormone or ADH, which is responsible for maintaining water balance in your body. Everything put together causes water retention!
