By now, you must be probably aware of how our body needs a perfect balance of all hormones, in order to function properly. Too little, or too much of any of the hormones required can immediately cause physical symptoms, alerting you to seek medical help.

You see, our body produces various hormones that drive our bodily functions. One of the hormones is thyroid and it is produced by a gland of the same name. The gland is butterfly-shaped and can be located in the front of the neck. Now, the hormone it produces is responsible for regulating the process in our body called metabolism.

Metabolism is essentially the process through which our body converts what we consume to energy. No wonder then that if our thyroid isn’t efficient in its function, it can affect how our body functions.

Problems with thyroid are more common in the case of women. Hence, females need to be even more vigilant about any health problems that might point to a problem in the thyroid gland.

Here are five signs that you need to get yourself checked for any thyroid issues:

  1. Unintentional change in weight

One kilogram here or there is normal, but if you notice that you’ve gained too much weight or lost too much weight all of a sudden, it could be due to your thyroid gland acting up. In addition, if you have been working out and eating right but don’t see any of the intended changes in your weight, it could be due to thyroid issues. So, if you’ve gained or lost weight without trying to, make sure you book yourself for a thyroid test.

  1. Constant fatigue

We all feel tired once in a while but if that feeling of fatigue doesn’t go away in spite of sleeping well, or resting on a day-off, you should definitely look into how your thyroid is working. An abnormal level of the hormone can leave you feeling fatigued, and eventually start affecting your ability to get through daily tasks. Many consider the constant tiredness to be one of the first few symptoms of thyroid issues.

  1. Concentration problems

Those who are diagnosed with thyroid issues often complain of going through a feeling that can be described as ‘brain fog’. It can cause problems with memory, lack of concentration and eventually, lead you to lose focus. This can interfere with your daily life, and add to the feeling of frustration.

  1. Unexplained muscle pain

Eventually, abnormal levels of thyroid in the body get in the way of signals sent by the brain to your body. In terms of muscles, you might start experiencing feelings of pain, tingling or numbness in your arms, hands, feet and legs. Muscular pain that you cannot explain is something you need to be alert about, and get checked at the first chance you get.

  1. Constant digestive issues

Thyroid issues have quite an impact on the digestive system. If adequate quantities of the hormone are not being produced by the gland, you can suffer from severe constipation. On the other hand, an overactive thyroid gland can cause regular bouts of diarrhoea. Digestive problems are also counted amongst one of the initial and common symptoms of a malfunctioning thyroid gland.
