Going braless is touted to be one of the ‘aha’ moments of the day. We mean it! Doesn’t it feel like freedom from those tight bras that wrap around our boobs? No wonder they create discomfort, especially in summers.

Earlier it only seemed like a European concept where females could go around without their bras on but this lockdown has given all of us this opportunity to finally let go of them.

But have you ever paid heed to what exactly happens when you drop the idea of wearing a bra? Well, let us shed some light on the consequences.

We got in touch with Dr. Gandhali Deorukhkar Pillai who is a consultant, obstetrics and gynecology department, from Wockhardt Hospital to ask her about the effects of going braless. Here’s what she told us.

Going braless is actually good for you, says Dr. Pillai
“Well, there is no doubt that not wearing a bra comes with its own perks. And it does a lot of good too”, says Dr. Gandhali.

Seven amazing benefits of not wearing a bra:

1. Your blood circulation becomes better
Blame those tight bras for hampering the blood flow. “Of course, when you wear a wired bra or a bra which is way too tight, it will hamper the blood circulation below your boobs. Due to this, some women feel pain in their chest. Therefore, going braless is a good idea if you need to improve your blood circulation”, she says.

2. You sleep better
Sleeping braless is something we all do and the reason is pretty clear: it helps us sleep better without any distress to the skin. In fact, there is a study published in a journal Chronobiology International that suggests wearing tight clothes like a bra or a panty while sleeping can bring discomfort while sleeping.

3. You breathe better
“The compression created by the wire in a bra on your diaphragm can lead to a lot of discomfort in breathing, especially to those who have asthma. It gives a lot of relief when you go braless”, says Dr. Pillai.

4. Lesser chances of you getting a fungal infection
There are certain fabrics that lead to a lot of sweating and soaking is not their forte. This can lead to discomfort during the summer when there is high humidity. “When you sweat, your breast and the fabric of your bra undergoes a lot of friction which can lead to itching as well as redness. Also, due to the accumulation of sweat, there are high chances that you can get a fungal infection. But if you don’t wear a bra then you have nothing to worry about”, she says.

5. Your nipples get better
“This happens when you wear a padded bra. The skin of your nipples is very sensitive and wearing padded bras make them go dry, due to which they itch a lot. But when you stop wearing a bra you can get rid of this situation and make your nipples better”, says Dr. Pillai.

6. You won’t get breast cysts
“Although wearing a bra is not the only reason to have breast cysts but if you wear very tight bras or wired bras for long hours then it can lead you towards it. That’s why going braless can keep you away from this issue as well”, she suggests.

7. Chances of you getting breast cancer also drops
Going braless also helps you minimize the chances of you getting breast cancer according to our expert. She points out that this is also because you’ll avoid wearing underwire bras which, at times, rupture the breast tissues. She also recommends that, in case, your boobs mostly get the support of underwire bras then you should avoid wearing them for long hours.

“Some women also complain about feeling breast pain if they go braless but this is only the case with those who have heavy breasts. For them, even I will say that going braless forever is not the right thing to do. But otherwise, you can totally opt for going braless as it is all about comfort”, concluded Dr. Pillai.

So folks, now you know the surprising benefits of not wearing a bra so ditch them today and stay free.
