Have you ever thought that what will happen if the allergy that is becoming a nuisance for you is left untreated? We highly doubt it because most of us don’t pay heed and leave them unattended.

A runny nose, mild breathlessness, cough, itchy eyes, and sinus headaches are some of the most common allergic symptoms that most us bear on a day to day basis. And instead of taking proper care we try to dig out some home hacks that give us instant gratification. But mind you sister, home remedies can just help you for a few hours but they are not a permanent solve. For that a proper treatment is required from an expert.

Those of you dealing with certain allergies must have witnessed that they come and go at a specific time of the year then may it be during a seasonal change or change in your immunity. Still we don’t pay attention and in the longer run when a minor breathlessness takes the shape of an almost untreatable sinus then it rings our bells.

There are many ways untreated allergies can impact your body. Here are five of them:

Initially the symptoms are very mild in nature and hence remain unnoticed. But unfortunately they dwell on you. Slowly you see that your body starts showing signs that are a little troublesome for you. Ignoring them can have the following effects:

1. Untreated allergies can lead to sinus infection

Allergies can severely impact your sinus, leading to a runny nose, nasal congestion, and sneezing. But what we don’t realise is that they also cause inflammation of the sinus cavity.

Also, listen:

Now, when the sinus is inflamed, it doesn’t drain out fluid the way it should—thus making it a damp breeding ground for bacteria. As bacteria continues to breed and grow, you end up with a sinus infection–all because you didn’t get the right treatment for your allergies at the right time.

2. Untreated allergies can also lead to asthma

An untreated allergy can lead to inflammation and other infections. The major problem of an untreated allergy is mucus and other dust particles that lead to respiratory congestion. These gunks clog the respiratory pipes. If this problem remains unchecked then it can lead to major inflammation in the ears and the nose. And in the longer run can also lead to asthma.

3. Allergies can bring sleeplessness in the long run

Have you started waking up way too often in the night? If the reason behind it is that you are unable to breathe then it can be a sign that you might be suffering from sinus. Another reason can be too much dust in your room which is blocking your nostrils. In fact, some people report in certain sleeping positions they just can’t breathe properly which also brings discomfort. If this is the case with you then must see your doctor before the problem becomes severe.

4. In fact, untreated allergies can also give you sleep apnea

Now you know how allergies can mess with your sleep. But here’s the thing: allergies can also lead to blockages in the air passage by causing swelling in the adenoids or tonsil glands. These blockages, along with nasal congestion, can give rise to obstructive sleep apnea.

A study published in the journal American Review of Respiratory Disease found that people who suffer from allergic rhinitis tend to have longer and more frequent bouts of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea not only causes fatigue and leads to poor concentration, but it can also pave the way for many ailments, including heart disease.

5. Long term allergies can lead to poor focus

This effect of allergy is not direct but interlinked. In the above point we have elaborated how sinus impacts the sleeping pattern in the people. And if the sleep is impacted then tiredness, fatigue, stress, and irritability will impact the overall performance of the person. And this is not about one sleepless night but an allergy like sinus can give you sleepless nights until it gets corrected then it can be weeks or even months.

The proper treatment is the only way out if you want to live an allergy free life

There is no need to suffer in silence if you are dealing with any of these allergies, as the treatment for most of them is readily available. The point is to be vigilant about them and when you see certain symptoms way too often, then visit a doctor to get the proper treatment. Not doing so can cause serious damage to your body and your life.
