The change in season has brought on the season of coughs and colds! We can already feel a slight nip in the air, and sneezes, coughs and sore throats are becoming commonplace. But here’s something at least I really didn’t know – that you could soothe your cough with pineapple juice!

If you also belong to the category of people who believe that juice is not the best option to have when you are under the weather… well, wakey wakey! Pineapple juice is apparently not all that bad.

Guess how I found out? I chanced upon a recent Instagram post by Chak De! India actor Vidya Malavade, who shared how this citrus juice was working magically for her bad bout of cough and cold.

“Here’s something that has been helping me with my cold/cough. Pineapple juice has a compound called bromelian which helps get rid of the phlegm from the body during colds and coughs,” wrote Vidya, who is fit as a fiddle courtesy her regular yoga practice.

In the week that she was unwell, she had been having a glass of pineapple juice diligently. What happened next? She found the coughing bouts had reduced and her nose was not super blocked or running constantly anymore.

Vidya also relied on other homemade tricks to soothe her sore throat. She noshed on ‘kadha’ and ginger tea concoctions, and said they helped her “tremendously”.

Expert’s word about pineapple juice and cough

Nutrition expert Kavita Devgan vouches for the pineapple and cough relation. Explaining the connect, she told HealthShots, “Yes, it’s correct. Pineapple juice boosts immunity and is very good for the respiratory system.”

According to the expert, as Vidya rightly pointed out, pineapple is enriched with the enzyme bromelain, and it is also loaded with the goodness of vitamin C. That makes it a wonder fruit to “cut inflammation of the nasal cavity and remove excessive mucus from the respiratory system, and thus help combat (and even keep away) regular colds and coughs, and even bronchitis”, Devgan explained.

As a fruit with benefits, pineapple is sometimes highly underrated.

Here are the ways pineapple can benefit your health:
  • It is loaded with antioxidants, which have restorative and free radical fighting properties. That makes it a great fruit to consume when sick.
  • It can help relieve bloating as it is loaded with minerals (potassium) and enzymes that help cut the bloat and detoxify the body.
  • The Vitamin C in pineapple makes it a great immunity booster. It also helps protect vision. Plus enough C in diet improves in the quality of our skin, and makes it radiant.

Myth around pineapple

“Many people don’t eat this sweet fruit thinking that sweet translates to being high in calories. But the fact is that 250 gm of pineapple gives only 125 calories and even though its glycemic index is 66, which some consider high, it is so loaded in fibre that its glycemic load is only 6,” Devgan said.

Now that you know the benefits, are you set to nosh on pineapple in general, and on pineapple juice when you cough and cold come knocking at your door?
