If you feel wasted after getting drunk and your body shows severe withdrawal symptoms, then you are definitely allergic to alcohol. Stunned? Well, it’s just like any other allergy. Some people are intolerant to soy, milk, peanuts, etc. but there are people whose bodies just can’t tolerate alcohol, after a certain limit.
And believe it or not, it’s an unpleasant feeling to have. It has also been seen that after a certain age people start becoming forgetful. Your skin goes for a toss, your senses start slowing down, and if not controlled in time, it can also land you in a hospital.
Therefore, you must listen to your body and identify the signs it is giving you.
According to Dr Pritam Moon, consultant physician, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai, a runny nose is one of the symptoms of alcohol intolerance. Inflammation in the sinus cavity can result in nasal congestion. This can happen due to high levels of histamine present in wine or even beer.
If you are allergic to alcohol, then you may feel nauseated. This can happen due to the increase in stomach acids that are responsible for irritation of the esophagus, intestines, and even the abdomen.
If you think it is just an after effect of drinking, then you are sadly mistaken. If you tend to immediately vomit after drinking alcohol, then it is the right time to give up on it. Because your body isn’t able to take it anymore!
“If you experience painful abdominal cramps and tend to make frequent trips to the bathroom due to diarrhea, then you may be intolerant to alcohol,” explains Dr Moon.
If you wheeze, cough, or experience tightness in the chest, then alcohol can be blamed for it.
If there are palpitations and you sweat continuously, then it means alcohol consumption is not for you. You may also feel unpleasant and dizzy, or choked due to an increase in the heart rate.
If you find swelling around your joints when you wake up after a hangover, then don’t think that you might have tripped. Because it could be due to the inflammation caused by alcohol. Swelling is one of the most visible signs of alcohol intolerance.
Also, listen:
“You will be shocked to know that if you are allergic to alcohol, your blood pressure drops after drinking. So, if you have a BP problem, then you should steer clear from all kinds of alcohol,” warns Dr Moon.
Alcohol intolerance can invite skin irritation, itchy skin, and acne, as it can cause flare-ups.
Now you know why we were asking you to drop that glass right away. So, the next time you see any of these signs after boozing, then consult a doctor and call it quits for a while.
