With Christmas just around the corner, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. There are parties to attend, gifts to buy, travel plans to make, and meals to cook—all while trying not to let yourself go overboard with all the delicious food that will inevitably be in front of you. But like most people, you may struggle with your sugar levels this time of year. But let us tell you; staying in control of your sugar intake in the holiday season does not mean missing out on anything. With a few healthy eating and lifestyle tips to manage blood sugar, you can enjoy the festival stress-free.

8 tips to manage blood sugar levels during Christmas

1. Plan ahead

The most important thing you can do is plan healthy meals and snacks before going out with friends or family. This will help prevent you from eating anything on impulse or being tempted by all the delicious food around you.

2. Start your day with healthy fat

Your body needs healthy fat to balance the sugar you will consume later in the day. Add nuts, seeds, avocado slices, or coconut flakes to your morning oatmeal or yogurt bowl.

3. Be mindful of portion size

It’s easy to get carried away when everyone else is eating large slices of pie or cookies; I’m not stopping you from having those treats with our friends and family but ensure that you don’t overindulge.

4. Limit alcohol consumption

Alcohol is full of carbs, which can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Try to limit yourself to one drink per day. If you’re at a party with free drinks, try sticking to water or seltzer with lemon juice instead!

5. Drink plenty of water

Water helps to balance your body’s natural pH levels, which can help reduce cravings and prevent overeating. Drinking enough water throughout the day (especially before meals) will help keep your blood sugar levels from dipping too low or spiking too high.

7. Walk regularly to manage blood sugar

Go for walks outside whenever possible. A brisk walk around the block will help keep your blood sugar levels stable and help you stay active during this festive season.

8. Get enough sleep

It’s easy to stay up late watching Christmas movies or playing games with friends and family members late into the night, making it harder for you to wake up in time for work or school the next morning. Make sure you get plenty of rest, so your body has time to recover from all the holiday festivities!
