To wear a bra or not wear a bra during breastfeeding? Well, breastfeeding is an integral part of a baby’s development and the mother as well. It can change the size and texture of a woman’s breasts, and your old bra might not fit you anymore! You might want to go for a bra that is more comfortable to help you breastfeed your kid. Also, you need to be mindful of not making certain mistakes when it comes to breastfeeding. However, if you are wondering whether or not you should wear a bra during breastfeeding, let’s find out!
HealthShots got in touch with Dr Asha Dalal, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, to help us understand whether or not a woman should wear a bra while lactating.
Your body goes through multiple changes throughout pregnancy and childbirth, including your breasts. As a result, your regular bras might not suit to give your breasts that much-needed comfort and support. Hence, choose a nursing bra that will fit your changing breast size comfortably.
Dr Dalal shares that it’s totally a woman’s choice to wear a bra or not. There is no harm in wearing a bra when you are breastfeeding. For instance, your breasts can feel tender when you are breastfeeding, so wearing a comfortable bra is extremely important. However, there are certain things you need to keep in mind to avoid problems.
Here are some of the things you should keep in mind while you are breastfeeding:
1. During lactation, breasts tend to increase in size and get heavier. Every so often, there is a leakage of milk from the breasts. So, make sure you choose a bra that supports your breasts.
2. A well-fitted maternity or breastfeeding bra offers support to the heavy breasts which tend to be pulled down. This often helps in preventing backache. Hence, it is wise to not use your old bra but invest in a good maternity or breastfeeding bra.
3. Make sure the bra is not too tight as it can lead to discomfort and engorgement. Get the fitting done professionally. The back strap should be broad for support and there should be several hooks for the adjustment of straps.
4. The feeding bra is also made of a softer material or cotton which makes it more comfortable. The bra also has a clasp which makes it easy to release the cup and make the breast accessible to the baby. This is done while still keeping the support to the breast. The layers of the feeding bra help with the leakage too. You can also use breast pads if you’re worried about leakage.
5. Many people prefer to use bras at night too. It gives support in the early days and also helps to absorb some leaked milk, improving the mother’s comfort.
6. A common issue is an underwired bra. Wearing this does not reduce milk production but can block milk ducts, thus reducing milk flow.
7. Also, it is important to change the bra often if it gets wet due to leaking.
In case, you have an issue wearing a bra during breastfeeding and prefer not to wear it, you don’t have to. However, it is best to consult your doctor to avoid any complications.
