Over the last few decades, medical science has progressed tremendously with the latest technologies across specializations improving success rates of treatment plans. One such procedure which is swiftly getting popular across the globe is IVF, which stands for In-vitro Fertilization. IVF is an assisted reproductive technology that helps couples who are unable to conceive naturally, by using a combination of medicines and surgical procedures that aid the sperm to fertilize the egg which is then implanted in a woman’s uterus.

The success of an IVF treatment plan is not hundred percent guaranteed and can be subject to various factors, some of which are in your own hands. You need to especially pay attention to the things that adversely impact your reproductive health as well as that of your partner and make sure to steer clear of them. Some of these are given below.

Read 6 reasons for failed IVF treatment:

1. Caffeine

If you are planning conception through IVF, it is advisable to not indulge in excessive intake of coffee. In the case of men, coffee can significantly hamper sperm production, while in the case of women, coffee can do far greater harm as it is known to increase the risk of a possible miscarriage. Individuals who are accustomed to consuming more than 1 to 2 cups of coffee a day, should refrain from doing so if they are planning to conceive.

2. Substance abuse

The adverse effects of substance use can never be understated. Indulging in the same can severely impact your reproductive organs, more so in the case of females. They can also damage the lungs. If your body is subject to constant substance abuse, there is a heightened risk of early onset of menopause. In men, substance abuse results in the production of lower-quality of sperm.

This is especially true when it comes to having the habit of smoking. The infertility rates in men and women who smoke are twice as compared to those who do not smoke. While ovulation is hampered in the case of women smokers, smoking also reduces the sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg.

3. Indulging in aggressive exercise

In case you are planning to conceive through IVF, then it is advisable to keep a check on your exercise levels. You should not engage in heavy exercising as in the case of women it is known to disturb the hormones that are responsible for controlling ovulation. Aggressive exercise can contribute to the lesser production of eggs from the ovary, which is not an ideal situation when planning IVF.

4. Certain foods

Food items that are high in calories or carbs should be avoided as they are proven to drastically reduce sperm production and, in some cases, also impact sperm motility. It is also advised to avoid processed meat as it has been medically proven that women who regularly consume it are 40 per cent more likely to suffer from ovulatory dysfunction which can cause you to ovulate less frequently.

When planning to conceive, it is advised to lean towards vegetable sources of protein rather than animal protein.

5. Certain medicines

There are certain medications that you take routinely which can interfere with your fertility drugs or cause hormonal imbalances. It is best to inform your doctor beforehand of any medicines that you take, these could include over-the-counter medicines or even certain anti-allergy pills. Make sure to notify your doctor of even the most ordinary drug that you consume.

6. Exposure to harmful substances

Exposure to harmful chemicals that may also be present in your house can significantly lower your chances of getting pregnant. Even fumes arising from paint, pesticides, and household cleaning substances can disturb fertility. Staying away from harmful substances is advised not just when you are undergoing an IVF procedure but also when you are pregnant, especially during your first trimester as it can increase the risk of a miscarriage.

Takeaway

When you are planning an IVF procedure, refrain from making any deviations from the plan that your IVF specialist has chalked out for you. Medical professionals overlooking your procedure will advise you to avoid certain things while undergoing IVF, which could vary from person to person according to their body type or certain pre-existing conditions. Bear in mind to always adhere to what your doctor advises
