Changes in a woman’s body during pregnancy are inevitable. Right from your breasts getting bigger, heavier and tender to peeing more, it’s not hard to miss these changes. But did you know the nose can also get impacted during pregnancy? That’s one thing expecting mothers have been talking about on social media! Many women have been sharing their pregnancy nose videos, showcasing the before and after shape! Their “after pregnancy” images clearly show them with bigger noses. Here’s all you need to know about the pregnancy nose trend.
You might have heard of pregnancy rhinitis, which also involves nose. In this case, you have to deal with a stuffy nose. Pregnancy nose is another change in body during pregnancy that women can’t stop talking about. Health Shots asked Dr Rana Choudhary, gynecologist, Apollo Spectra Mumbai, for the buzz around pregnancy nose.
Agreed, the list of changes in body during pregnancy is long. But the first question that pops in the mind of expecting moms is whether a particular change is normal or not. You even wonder if your baby’s movements are normal or not (normal baby movements during pregnancy). Dr Choudhary says that a woman’s body goes through changes from the first to the third trimester and they continue in the postpartum stage. Moreover, most of the changes are normal, including your nose getting bigger during pregnancy.
The expert says that from the beginning of the first trimester and second trimester, the blood vessels tend to expand to cope with the growing fetus. The estrogen levels in your body can cause increased blood flow into your mucous membrane right under your nose. The muscles and membranes in your nose expand owing to the increased blood supply. Hence, the size of your nose will also increase. During the third or last trimester, some women experience water retention in their face, and this leads to swelling of the nose.
Not all pregnant women will have bigger noses. Only some women maybe affected. Dr Choudhary says that some women may also notice that the colour of their nose changes to red. This happens due to the changing hormone levels that impact the pigmentation in the skin.
Your nose will return to its normal shape only after pregnancy. Once your hormones stabilise, edema also reduces.
It’s not just physical changes that women experience during pregnancy. Sometimes, women also get loose motions during pregnancy.
Here are some other changes
The expert says it is a must for a pregnant woman to keep an eye on the chances and speak to their doctor if the symptoms increase. It is always better to discuss your symptoms with your obstetrician so you don’t have any serious complications.
