However, for women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), their efforts may go in vain as it can be complicated to become pregnant with PCOS. The good news is that it is not impossible.

PCOS and pregnancy problems

An irregular menstrual cycle, absence of menstruation, heavy flow, short and light menstruation, and even spotting are all symptoms of the hormonal condition PCOS, which alters the menstrual cycle. This makes it extremely challenging for a woman to get pregnant. Additionally, PCOS symptoms such as obesity, excessive hair growth in unwanted areas, acne, and infertility are also present. Though the exact cause of it is unknown, it is thought and various studies have demonstrated that you can become pregnant with lifestyle modifications and a healthy diet.

Yes, PCOS can be effectively managed with the proper treatment, a good diet and lifestyle, and specific expert interventions. Thus, it increases a person’s chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby.

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Ritu Hinduja, Fertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Mumbai to suggest how a woman can become pregnant while dealing with PCOS.

Here are 5 major tips to increase fertility with PCOS:

1. Reverse any insulin resistance

Women with PCOS often struggle with insulin resistance, which results in high blood sugar and insulin levels and increases the likelihood that they will experience conceiving difficulties. Dr Hinduja says, “To manage it your doctor can prescribe Metformin or Myoinisitol to help try cutting out sugar and refined carbs from your diet. Also, he/she can suggest that you make sure that you get enough protein, fibre and healthy fats.” With these changes, you will see your blood sugar levels and your insulin level drop.

2. De-stress

Balanced hormones and healthy adrenals are essential for fertility, but all of your hormones are impacted by the stress hormone cortisol, which is produced by your adrenal glands. So by actively lowering and preventing any stress, you can improve your chances of getting pregnant. To destress yourself you can perform yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and even fun activities to boost your mood. 3. Track your menstrual cycle

Women with PCOS suffer from irregular period cycles therefore it is really important for them to track it every month. “By keeping track of your cycles, you can pinpoint the precise four days in the month to try for a baby by learning when you ovulate and where your fertile window falls,” says Dr Hinduja.

4. Confirm ovulation with test strips

You can get ovulation kits from any local pharmacy, which function very similarly to a pregnancy test, to determine when you are ovulating. It checks your urine to let you know when you are most likely to become pregnant. If this test results in a positive reading, ovulation should start in one to two days. Therefore, those who intend to become pregnant should have sex within three days of the test. When an egg is released from the ovaries, this may increase the likelihood that it will become fertilised.

5. Adopt a healthy lifestyle

A pregnancy with PCOS can be managed with changes in lifestyle that includes clean, plant-based eating and holistic living. Dr Hinduja says, “Target being in the healthy weight range, quit smoking, cutting back on alcohol, eating a healthy diet, get plenty of regular exercise and enough sleep.” A minor weight decrease might occasionally lead to more regular ovulation in overweight or obese women with PCOS, increasing the likelihood of conception.
