Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS, is a condition in which a woman’s levels of the sex hormones progesterone and oestrogen go off track. This hormonal disorder, which can’t be cured but only managed, results in enlarged ovaries that have small cysts on the outer edges. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), PCOS affects over 116 million women worldwide (3.4 per cent). When it comes to its treatment, many women want to know if homeopathic treatment for PCOS is effective or not. So, we reached out to an expert to learn more about it.

Health Shots got in touch with Dr Ummekulsum Baghwala, a homeopathic consultant and nutritionist, to find out how effective homeopathy is for PCOS.

Can homeopathy be helpful in managing PCOS?

This syndrome, which results in irregular menstruation, infertility, obesity, hirsutism, hair loss and facial hair, has a significant negative impact on a woman’s psychosocial health. When it comes to managing the condition, hormone replacement therapy and lifestyle modification are available as treatments in modern medicine. Oral contraceptive pills and hormonal pills have a generalized influence on disrupted hormonal regulation, which may further comprise a person’s natural hormonal balance.

A case study on how homeopathic treatment helped manage PCOS

The Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH) released two case studies of patients suffering from PCOS. It showed that depression and anxiety are common in PCOS patients and did not significantly improve with oral contraceptive pill therapy. However, a homeopathic approach to the management of PCOS considers the patient’s mental as well as genetic makeup.

Homeopathic treatment was found to be effective in two PCOS patients, as per the study. It helped in balancing the hyperactivity of the glands, regulating hormonal balance, dissolving ovarian cysts and enhancing the normal functioning of the ovaries, eliminating the need for hormone therapy and surgery. The likelihood of conception also significantly increased. Both patients also reported improvements in issues including menstruation, blood flow, menstrual pain, hair loss and weight. Hence, in those two cases, the homeopathic treatment was successful in managing the condition.

These positive changes, meanwhile, are not the exclusive outcome of homeopathic treatment. Those two patients adhered to a strict routine of regular exercise and low-glycemic-index foods, which also assisted them in maintaining hormonal balance.

Here’s what an expert has to say in support of homeopathic treatment for PCOS

Dr Baghwala says, “Homeopathic treatment for PCOS is quite effective in nature and an effective alternative treatment. Instead of only treating the symptoms, the primary objective of homeopathic treatment is to stimulate the healing process of the problem. While it won’t directly treat PCOS, it will help manage the root cause of PCOS – hormonal imbalance.”
