As soon as you hit puberty, your uterus becomes the star organ in your body. That’s because your reproductive age begins, once you reach this stage. Medically, the uterus is known as the womb. It can also be termed as a thick-walled muscular organ that is capable of expanding and accommodating a growing foetus.

Your uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ that is located in the pelvic region of a woman. Your uterus tends to play a vital role in reproduction. It is responsible for the implantation and nourishment of the fertilised ovum. Moreover, this organ allows pushing out the baby during birth via muscle contraction.

1. Your uterus can change its size. Yeah, it’s that flexible.

During the first trimester, the uterus is a grapefruit-size. In the second trimester, it’s like a papaya and in the third trimester, it is like a watermelon. Hence, it can expand to the size of a watermelon and after the birth of the baby; it goes back to its original shape.

“Some women will have a uterus in the shape of a heart. It is known as the bicornuate uterus. The two bumps sticking together make it look like a heart,” shares Dr Veena Aurangabadwala, gynecologist, Zen multispecialty hospital, Mumbai.

2. You can be born without a uterus

There are women who are born without a uterus, and this condition is called Mayer-Rokitansky Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH). In this disorder, the vagina also doesn’t develop properly and all the reproductive functions get hampered.

3. At times, there can be two of them

“You will be shocked to know that there are women who have two uteruses. Yes, that’s right! It is known as uterus didelphys. Those with two uteruses may also have two cervixes and even two vaginas, and still, can conceive,” explains Dr Aurangabadwala.

4. Uterus can be transplanted

If someone is born without a uterus, then technology is available that can help with uterus transplants, in order to help to become pregnant.

5. It makes sex more pleasurable

Have you heard about the term cervical orgasm? Well, that’s one of the reasons. Cervix is basically the pass that connects your vagina to your uterus and during sexual intercourse, it leads to sensation in the region due to which you get this orgasm. That’s what makes women hesitant in getting a hysterectomy because they fear that they might lose a pleasure point.

6. It preps itself for pregnancy around almost 500 times

In a woman’s entire reproductive life, her uterus is all set to be pregnant around 500 times. Isn’t that fascinating? That also means that you get almost around 500 periods.
