As women, we think a lot about our nipples. Yes, everything about the size and shape, and so much more. But have you noticed your perky twins peep out every single time the temperature dips? It could also have happened on several other occasions. But why do you get hard nipples? Is there a particular reason for this? We know you have a million questions floating through your head, and we get it why.

Well, there’s nothing to worry about, says leading sex-positive content creator Leeza Mangaldas. In her recent Instagram post, she says, “The nerves in the nipples react to stimuli, both physical and psychological. While sometimes a response to arousal such as a sexual touch or thought, nipples getting hard isn’t always or inherently sexual.”

What is the science behind hard nipples?

Let’s try to understand the anatomy of your nipple. Underneath your nipple and areola, there are several tiny muscles that contract and push the nipple out. The sympathetic nervous system is what makes your heart race, causes goosebumps, and makes your palms sweat.

Your nipples can get aroused, in response to something sexual. Even thinking about something sexual can cause your nipples to get erect. But it could also be due to other reasons, says Mangaldas.

“It can also happen due to something as simple as a change in temperature, such as when you feel cold, or even something as simple as the fabric of your shirt or undergarments brushing against your skin. So, it’s really no big deal and nothing to worry about. It’s just the body being the body, and doing its thing,” she adds.

Is there something to be worried about?

Nipples come in all shapes and sizes, and they are genetically predetermined to respond a certain way. If you find that they are sore and painful for a long period of time, it’s time to reach out to a doctor and get help. Also, make sure to check if your nipples have got retracted or inverted. These could be underlying signs of something serious.

Apart from that, Mangaldas says, “Whether hard or not, so what if nipples are sometimes visible under your clothing? They’re just a part of the body, it’s something we shouldn’t have to feel so conscious about.”

So ladies, take a chill pill because your nipples are just the way they are supposed to be! Convinced much?
