We all have our “oops I did it again!” moments. Except, we are talking about unsafe sex. And whenever we engage in that–we very blatantly run towards the nearest pharmacy and ask the bhaiya for emergency contraceptive pills.
And we know that you know just how bad they are for your health–but aur kar bhi kya sakte hai. Right? Wrong! Because you can always NOT skip birth control measures, including making him wear a condom, as popping morning after-pills regularly is not the answer.
Emergency contraception can wreck your mental well-being
We don’t need to spoon feed you the hard-hitting facts about regular consumption of emergency contraceptive pills. There are a number of studies out there already doing that.
But when it comes to your mental well-being, we aren’t ashamed to say that these pills can screw with that too. In fact, Dr Gandhali Deorukhkar Pillai, consultant obstetrics gynaecologist at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central says that she has “witnessed many patients dwell on suicidal tendencies, anger, mood swings, and headaches.”
But how do emergency contraceptive pills work?
Emergency contraceptive pills are high on progesterone, and so they prevent you from ovulating. Because if there is no egg to fertilize that sperm can do basically nothing. But the thing to remember is that if fertilization has already happened, then these pills won’t be able to abort pregnancy.

Dr Pillai also says:
What women don’t understand is that the regular consumption of these pills can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, such as blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, and heart attack.
What if you’ve been taking the morning-after pill regularly?
“If you are taking these emergency contraceptive pills on a regular basis then you must undergo liver and kidney function tests, blood clotting tests, and get your cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked every year. Other than that yearly sonography and breast checkup are musts,” Dr Pillai suggests.
Now that you know just what a terrible mistake it was to opt for these pills, it’s time to practice safe sex and save your health. Over and out!
