Chia seeds are believed to be tiny superheroes that offer plenty of health benefits. However, consuming too much of anything can lead to certain complications. Here are some of the side effects of chia seeds that you should not ignore.
Have you ever experienced digestive discomfort after consuming chia seeds? Chia seeds are rich in fibre and too much fibre can lead to stomach problems, as per a study published inthe journal Diet and Health. It may be because chia seeds absorb water and expand in the stomach. If not consumed with some liquid, it can trigger discomfort, bloating, constipation, and even intestine blockages. While it is uncommon, consuming chia seeds may trigger allergic reactions in some people. The most common allergies that you may experience after eating these foods are food allergies such as vomiting, diarrhea, and itching of the lips or tongue. Chia seeds contain a type of omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is essential for your overall health. While they are generally believed to be healthy, somestudies including the one published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, have linked ALA consumption to an increased risk of prostate cancer. Chia seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have blood-thinning properties and may increase the risk of bleeding as they slow down the process of blood clotting. However, it is important to note that chia seeds, if eaten moderately, may not cause significant blood-thinning effects for most people. Did you know eating chia seeds can lower your blood pressure? A study published in the journal Diabetes Care found that continuous consumption of chia seeds for 12 weeks reduced blood pressure among the participants. While chia seeds are rich in nutrients, they are also high in calories and fat. There are approximately 138 calories in two tablespoons of chia seeds. When eaten in moderation, they will make you feel satiated and you may end up eating less than you want. However, eating too many chia seeds can make you go over your daily calorie limit. If you do not soak chia seeds before you consume them, they may expand in the throat and cause blockage, which can increase the risk of choking.
