We alter our fashion and clothing when the seasons change, so why do we keep the same skincare routine? When the temperature drops, our bodies are exposed to the abrasive and dry weather in winter. Our bodies are vulnerable to skin problems that are frequently ignored, whether the cause is internal or external factors such as pollution, clothing material, climate change, and other things. But my mother had one great solution up her sleeve that has helped me over the years – safflower oil for skin.

My mother believes that this oil helps restore the skin’s moisture barrier by more readily penetrating my skin’s deeper layers than creams. And trust me incorporating it in my daily skincare routine has helped me a lot. However, we couldn’t hand out this information without checking with a doctor. So, let’s look at the benefits of safflower oil for skin.

What is safflower oil?

Safflower oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the safflower plant (carthamus tinctorius). It is a colourless, flavourless and odourless oil that has a high smoke point, making it suitable for various cooking methods. Rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, it also contains omega-6 fatty acids. Safflower oil also has a high linoleic acid concentration, making it beneficial to the skin.

2. Anti-inflammatory properties

The oil contains linoleic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe irritated skin conditions like eczema or dermatitis.

3. Antioxidant content

This oil is rich in antioxidants like vitamin E, which can help to protect skin from free radical damage and promote a more youthful appearance.

4. Collagen production

The linoleic acid in safflower oil may support collagen production, helping to maintain skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Side effects of safflower oil for skin

While this oil is generally safe for most people, some may experience problems like:

1. Allergic reactions

Individuals with allergies to plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family (such as ragweed, marigolds, or daisies) may be more prone to allergic reactions, says Dr Ramdas.

2. Breakouts

Safflower oil is high in linoleic acid, which is beneficial for most skin types but may cause breakouts in individuals with acne-prone skin if used too often.

Can we use safflower oil every day?

Yes, many people can use safflower oil daily as part of their skincare routine. However, it’s crucial to perform a patch test first to ensure there are no adverse reactions, says the expert.

It provides various skin benefits, which is why it is often used in skin care products. If you have oily skin, you’ll become a fan of this oil because it doesn’t feel sticky or greasy, and gives you beautiful skin.
