Being a kid, I used to have bushy eyebrows, and I used to loathe them until my teens. It was only when having thick eyebrows became a trend, that I started loving the idea of having naturally thick brows. As I entered adulthood, my eyebrow hair started receding, and looking at thinner eyebrows made me worried. But my mother made sure that I didn’t have to worry about my eyebrow hair. What is rosemary oil?

Rosemary oil is an essential oil which is extracted from the rosemary plant and is traditionally used for medicinal and culinary purposes. This is a common variety of essential oils used for various purposes since it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In recent years, this oil has been in the news claiming that it is great for hair growth.

Benefits of Rosemary Oil

Cosmetologist and Trichologist Dr Priti Mahire shares some benefits of using rosemary oil for eyebrows.

1. Increases blood circulation

“Rosemary oil contains carnosic acid, which heals tissue damage and nerve damage as well. It also improves the cell turnover over so with regular use, it improves blood circulation, which in turn, helps the hair follicles to receive more nutrients,” said D Priti Mahire.

2. Antioxidant properties

Rosemary oil has antioxidant properties as well. It curbs the effect caused by the release of free radicals in the body. It works by protecting the cells of the body against free radicals which in turn reduces hair loss.

3. Has essential vitamins and minerals

“Rosemary oil is packed with essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, C and B complex, calcium and iron. These nutrients nourish the eyebrow hair follicles to grow fuller, healthier, thicker and stronger,” advises Dr Mahire.

4. Replacement to hair growing serums

People who suffer from pattern baldness can use rosemary oil as a natural and healthier replacement for medicated hair-growing serums. The effect of using rosemary oil is equivalent to using minoxidil, says the expert.

How to use rosemary oil for eyebrow growth?

“Clean your eyebrow and pat it dry. Then gently apply the mixture of oil to your eyebrows with a clean applicator. Keep it for 30 minutes and then wash it off. You can do this daily to get faster results,” recommends the expert.

It will take at least 6 months of using rosemary oil regularly and correctly to see the new eyebrow hair growth.

Word of caution: Rosemary oil should not be used directly on eyelashes or eyebrows. It should always be used with some carrier oil. You can mix it with carrier oils like coconut oil, olive oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil or avocado oil.

Always do a patch test before applying it to the eyebrows.

Are there any side effects of using rosemary oil?

While it doesn’t have major side effects, but it can be harmful if you do not dilute it with career oils. You may experience burning, redness, irritation or allergic reaction. Those with sensitive skin should be extra careful. Be cautious while applying rosemary oil to your eyebrows, especially around the eyes as the skin is thinner. Also, don’t forget to check with your dermatologist to avoid any risks.
