I have been suffering from hair loss for a while now. Despite trying numerous oils and hair masks to stop hair loss, nothing worked for me. Then my mom told me to try red palm oil for strong and healthy hair. Trusting her wisdom, I started using red palm oil for my hair, and within a few days, I noticed fewer hair strands on the floor. No wonder this oil is becoming increasingly popular among those who want a natural and effective solution for hair loss. Read on to learn more about the benefits of red palm oil for hair, and how to incorporate it into your hair care routine.

What is red palm oil?

Red palm oil is a natural oil derived from the fruit of the Elaeis guineensis tree. This fruit has a rich red colour, especially when uncooked. The oil contains carotenoids like lycopene, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene, giving it the red colour.

What are the benefits of red palm oil for hair?

1. Rich in emollient content

Red palm oil has a high emollient content. An emollient is a compound that lubricates your hair and reduces irritation on your scalp. It is also well known that red palm oil preserves and locks in hair moisture. The main ingredients in the red palm oil that give it its moisturising qualities are myristic and palmitic acids. Your hair and scalp may be shielded against irritation by these acids, says dermatologist Dr Piyali Chatterjee.

2. Deeply cleanses and conditions your hair

You can efficiently condition and clean your hair using red palm oil. The oil’s myristic acid acts as a cleanser for the scalp and hair. Stearic acid can also be found in the oil. This acid may be good at removing grease and filth from hair. These chemicals may also function as conditioners and shield your hair from serious harm if it is dehydrated. The oil gives your hair lustre, according to a 2021 study published in the Journal of Advanced Pharmaceutical Technology
and Research.

3. Helps to fight scalp damage

Red palm oil can protect the scalp. This could be due to the carotenes it contains. Your hair won’t dry out since carotenoids promote the scalp’s natural production of sebum.

4. Rich in antioxidant properties

Red palm oil is rich in vitamin E, an effective antioxidant. According to a 2010 study published in the Tropical Lifesciences Research journal, vitamin E can support healthy hair and combat oxidative stress on the scalp. Hair ageing may also be accelerated by oxidative stress.

5. Prevents premature greying and hair loss

Since red palm oil contains vitamin E, it helps to reduce hair fall and greying of the hair, says the expert.

6. Strengthens the hair

Red palm oil is a powerful antioxidant that is high in vitamin E. It strengthens hair follicles by encouraging cell growth. In addition to giving red palm oil its colour, the carotenes in it aid in cell growth and division, which keeps hair from weakening and becoming brittle.

How to use red palm oil?

Here’s how you can incorporate it into your hair care routine:

1. Before a shower

Before you take a shower, you can massage red palm oil onto your head. Make sure to massage the oil into your scalp. Doing so stimulates new hair growth by increasing blood flow to the area. You can apply the oil on your hair overnight and then wash it off in the morning. Make use of a good cleaning shampoo to remove the oil from your hair.

2. After a shower

Red palm oil can be used as a leave-in conditioner for hair just after a shower. While applying the oil, make sure your hair is still damp. In addition to protecting your hair, the oil stops frizz. This is especially useful if your hair
is coloured. The oil creates a protective coating on your hair, shielding it from dangerous external factors.

While red palm oil is good for your hair, you should check with a dermatologist before including it in your hair care routine.
