It was past midnight when I realised that I had been working on my office project for hours. The realisation came from the strong burning sensation I felt in my eyes after having to stare at my laptop screen for so long. I pushed my laptop away and switched off my room’s light. Even while lying down, my eyes continued to hurt.

The next day, my father called me from my room to help him read out his medical bill while he did his hisaab. I was readying to be his assistant accountant but as soon as I glanced at the bill, all the numbers and letters looked hazy. I let out a low scream because of the out-of-focus vision I had.

Even after washing my eyes with water and putting the doctor recommended eye drops, my vision didn’t seem to get better at all. I immediately decided to book an appointment with the ophthalmologist a.k.a eye doctor. He finally declared it was time to get prescription glasses.

My mother was already ready with her spicy magic potion when I arrived
While I slumped on the chair and sulked about the new addition to my face, my mother told me to take some of her magic potion while scolding me about the computer shumputer ke kaam.

What was the magic potion?
It was 10 black peppercorns powdered and mixed with one teaspoon of ghee (clarified butter) along with half a spoon of mishri. The texture seemed a bit foreign on my tongue but I continued to have it for about almost a year. While I maintained a healthy diet and consciously reduced my screen time, this black pepper potion helped me massively improve my eyesight.

How does the black pepper potion actually work?
Who knew that one of the most common food ingredients usually found on our dining table can help us improve our eyesight? Black pepper is a well-known spice renowned for its pungent taste and musty aroma.

Kaali mirch is a rich source of potassium. When our body runs low on potassium levels, it affects our eyesight as well. According to Ayurveda, having black pepper may help with improving your vision over time.

Along with balancing potassium levels, it also helps in the absorption of valuable nutrients we get from the food that we eat. Getting nutrients such as beta-carotene, selenium, curcumin and B-vitamins are very beneficial for eye health.

The anti-inflammatory quality present in black pepper helps in reducing swellings in the eyes and other parts of the body. It also has antibacterial and immune-boosting properties that help in having healthier eyes as well as stronger eyesight.

What precautions must be taken while having it though?
Just like every valuable element, black pepper shouldn’t be consumed in excess. Although black pepper has been used for ages to make medicines, if not taken properly then it can have serious side effects. Therefore, you must stray away from consuming large amounts since it can lead to a severe burning sensation in the stomach.
