As the festive season gathers momentum and pollution levels rise, my allergies and susceptibility to cold and flu flares up too. My grandmom, who has a treasure of home remedies, brought me a piece of gur or jaggery from the kitchen. She says jaggery is good for respiratory health and that gur can save you from the side effects of pollution.

Jaggery, an unrefined form of sugar derived from cane or palm, is good for lungs, especially when pollution is at its peak. Health Shots got in touch with Dr. Nirupama Rao, Nutritionist at Rejua Energy Centre, Mumbai, to understand the benefits of jaggery for respiratory health.

Benefits of jaggery for healthy lungs

Jaggery, a traditional sweetener derived from sugarcane juice or palm sap, has been a staple in many cultures for centuries. Beyond its delectable taste, jaggery is also renowned for its potential health benefits. Incorporate jaggery into your diet, particularly in relation to respiratory health to protect yourself from pollution.

1. Jaggery boosts immunity

“Jaggery is good for respiratory health and is known for its ability to boost the immune system. Jaggery contains antioxidants that help the body fight off infections. A strong immune system is vital in preventing respiratory illnesses caused by viruses and bacteria,” shares Dr Rao.

2. Soothes cough and cold

Jaggery is a common ingredient in traditional remedies for cough and cold. Its natural sweetness and warming properties make it effective in soothing a sore throat and reducing irritation. Mixing jaggery with warm water or herbal teas can provide relief from cold symptoms.

3. Iron content

“Anaemia is a condition that is caused due to deficiency of red blood cells or haemoglobin and leads to feelings of tiredness and weakness. Jaggery is a good source of iron, a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen in the blood,” says the expert. By preventing anaemia, jaggery supports overall lung function and helps to maintain healthy oxygen levels in the body.

4. Jaggery has anti-allergic properties

Respiratory allergies, such as asthma and hay fever, can be particularly troublesome. Some individuals have found relief from these allergies by consuming jaggery. Its anti-allergic properties may help alleviate symptoms and reduce the frequency and severity of allergic reactions.

5. Detoxification

Respiratory health can be greatly enhanced through detoxification. Jaggery aids in the removal of toxins from the body, which includes the respiratory system. This cleansing process can lead to healthier lungs and airways.

Incorporating jaggery as a natural remedy or sweetener in your diet can be a delicious and wholesome way to support your respiratory health. Its time-tested properties, combined with a balanced and healthy lifestyle, may help you breathe easier and enjoy the sweetness of life.

While jaggery offers various potential benefits for respiratory health, it is important to consume it in moderation. Jaggery is a source of sugar and calories, so excessive intake may have adverse effects on overall health.
