Methi or fenugreek seeds is an age-old home remedy for many health concerns. From weight loss to managing hair issues – people turn to this ingredient for a lot of reasons. I have often seen my mom and grandmother soaking methi seeds in water overnight and having it in the morning. They usually take it for body pains or joint pains but recent studies are showing more benefits of methi seeds.

Methi seeds can be good for total, LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol or bad cholesterol and triglyceride in people with high lipid levels.

These bright, yellow-colored, small-sized seeds have a distinct flavor and several nutrients. They hold a special place in the spice box of every Indian household and besides simply lending food a distinct flavor, they also nourish our body with copper, potassium, iron, calcium, folic acid, riboflavin, dietary fiber, and vitamins like A, C, K, and B6. These are beneficial to control high blood pressure.

Did you know that methi seeds can help lower your cholesterol?

“Fenugreek is believed to have a number of health effects. Limited research indicates it might help reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides. It is essential to note, though, that more study needs to be done before fenugreek could be recommended as part of any cholesterol-lowering plan,” Avni Kaul, a nutritionist tells Health Shots, about how effective methi seeds can be for lowering cholesterol.

Kaul also brought our attention to a review published in 2020 which analyzed the procedures and results of 15 studies on methi seeds. Participants were either healthy, diabetic, or suffering from high blood lipids like high cholesterol. Fenugreek was served in different forms, like in the form of powdered leaves, seed extracts, or seed powder. Authors later concluded that there was certain evidence that having fenugreek supplements helps reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides.

“One logic is that fenugreek might have the ability to boost the number of LDL receptors present in the liver. These are proteins that allow cholesterol to enter cells. An increase in LDL receptors might help cells remove LDL from the bloodstream. Besides, some studies do suggest that methi seeds could slightly improve the lipid profile,” says Kaul.

Dr. Dimple Jangda, a Ayurveda and gut health coach, recently promoted the use of methi seeds for reducing bad cholesterol, through her Instagram handle. She recommends taking the “magical spice” methi seeds for 7 days to see the benefits. She suggests having it as methi seeds water.
