Every time you get sick, mothers and grandmothers always have a million remedies to help you get some relief. One of the most common health problems is cough. Not long ago, I got a bad cough, and my mother came to my rescue and suggested that I should eat guava leaves for cough. Baffled at first, I was skeptical to try it out but believing her instincts, I tried it and guava leaves gave me some relief. While it worked for me, I had to check with an expert if it worked or if it was just a coincidence.
Cough is a health condition that causes trouble breathing. There are various reasons behind this health condition like allergies, infections, or environmental pollutants. Guava leaf extract has been part of ancient home remedies for centuries. It was used to treat ailments such as cough and pulmonary diseases in Bolivia and Egypt. It was also a part of ancient cough remedies in India, according to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.
Guava contains vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants, all of which can help cure symptoms of cough, says Ayurveda expert Dr Chanchal Sharma.
“There are various bioactive compounds present in guava leaves, including essential oils, and phenolic compounds that act as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidants. The mycolic qualities of guava leaves help to remove mucus from pulmonary tracts and minimize the risk of cough,” adds the expert.
Not just cough, guava leaves can be a good addition to your life in general as it offers many health benefits. Here are some ways to add guava leaves to your diet:
Take a handful of guava leaves and steep them in hot water for a few minutes, until they come to a boil. Strain it once done and add some honey or lemon to add some flavor to the tea. It is believed to control blood sugar levels, promote digestion, and boost immunity.
If you are not a big fan of guava-leaf tea, you should try adding them to your diet. You can simply add them to stews, soups, or stir-fries.
Guava leaves are edible and you can eat them directly. Clean them properly and chew them on an empty stomach.

Even though guava leaves are considered healthy, there is not much research on whether it is safe for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, says the expert. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before including guava leaves in your diet.
Also, some people may be allergic to guava leaves and fruit. So, they should always consume it after consulting their healthcare provider. Another thing you should always keep in mind is that you should consume guava leaves in moderation.
