How does eating clove empty stomach help with digestive problems?

A go-to home remedy for digestive problems, clove has been proven to be an effective way to get rid of your stomach problems. A study published in the Nature Journal found that clove helps with digestion and improves gut health. It also increases the production of digestive enzymes and alleviate issues of bloating.

It is infused with antimicrobial properties that eliminate harmful bacteria in the intestines, thus promoting improved digestion and nutrient absorption. Cloves are also recognized for their ability to eliminate E. coli, a bacterium responsible for food poisoning, says the expert.

What are the other benefits of eating clove on an empty stomach?

Health Shots asked Internal Medicine expert Dr Chhaya Vaja to share why eating clove on an empty stomach can help you deal with a lot of health problems.

1. Promotes liver health

Clove contains eugenol, which is considered a beneficial compound for your liver.
A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that rats who were fed fatty liver disease mixtures containing either clove oil or eugenol experienced improved liver function, reduced oxidative stress and decreased inflammation. Dried clove buds possess properties that encourage the growth of new cells, aiding in liver detoxification, and providing protection through elements such as thymol and eugenol, says the expert.

2. Regulates blood sugar levels

Cloves contain compounds that can help keep your blood sugar levels in check. Dr Vaja says that diabetic patients may be able to manage their blood sugar levels better if they take a small amount of clove powder on an empty stomach. This can result in decreased insulin resistance and improved insulin secretion. However, consult a doctor to know the right amount of quantity you would need to manage your blood sugar levels.

3. Reduces nausea

Clove is my mom’s go-to remedy to reduce nausea and vomiting. In fact, clove has been a part of folk medicine for centuries due to its therapeutic properties. Even studies like one published in Biochemicals found that clove can help you deal with nausea. As per the expert, chewing clove on an empty stomach is beneficial due to its antiseptic qualities. Certain enzymes are activated when cloves mix with saliva, which aids in alleviating symptoms associated with nausea.

4. Good for dental health

Did you know clove is often added to toothpaste and mouthwash? They are also used as a remedy for toothache. Besides offering pain relief, they also contribute to decreasing oral inflammation, plaque, and gingivitis and combatting halitosis, adds the expert.

5. Helps deal with joint pain

Are you suffering from constant joint pain that won’t go away? Try cloves! They are rich in manganese and flavonoids, which contribute to bone density preservation. These compounds also assist in the repair of bone tissue which aids in alleviating or preventing discomfort in the joints. Additionally, they help slow down muscle deterioration in older individuals, elucidates the expert.

6. Promotes hair growth

While losing 100 strands of hair every day is normal, any more than that could be a sign of hair fall. If you’ve been experiencing a massive hair fall or simply looking for ways to make your hair grow stronger and healthier, you can include clove in your haircare routine. A study published in the International Journal of Applied Pharmaceutics found that clove can help promote hair growth.

7. Boosts immunity

Clove can help boost your immunity as well, which is crucial to do in this day and age. Consuming cloves regularly can reduce your risk of developing illnesses such as flu, colds, bronchitis, sinus issues, and viral infections. A study published in the Journal of Food and Drug Analysis found that clove extracts help bolster your immunity. It also contains anti-viral properties and the ability to purify blood. This reduces toxicity levels in the blood which in turn boosts the body’s immune system.

While clove offers a lot of benefits for your health, everyone’s body responds differently to different things? It is always a good idea to check with your healthcare provider to know the possible side effects of clove for you.
