My skin is oily, so it is always shiny or greasy. I also have enlarged pores, spend a lot of time dealing with breakouts. And when I apply a little bit of make-up to work, it slides off easily throughout the day. I have been using skin care products specifically formulated for women with oily skin. But I wanted to look for something natural. My mom told me to apply gram flour or besan and turmeric face pack to tackle my skin-related problems. I started using besan and turmeric face pack twice a week. Within a few weeks, I began noticing clearer skin. Let us find out if an expert agrees that besan and turmeric is good for oily skin.

What are the causes of oily skin?

Before we move on to the home remedy, it is important to know the causes of oily skin. It is often caused by overactive sebaceous glands, genetics, hormonal changes, and stress. Excess oil production leads to shiny skin, enlarged pores, and acne, says celebrity cosmetologist and skin expert Dr Monica Kapoor.

How do gram flour and turmeric help women with oily skin?

The combination of gram flour and turmeric acts as a natural exfoliant and helps control oil production. Gram flour, which is made from dried chickpeas, absorbs excess oil. Turmeric, on the other hand, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing acne and calming the skin, says the expert.

A review of 18 studies related to turmeric and skin health was published in the Phytotherapy Research in 2016. In those studies, people with skin conditions, including acne and psoriasis, were examined. Researchers noted significant improvement in skin conditions severity in the turmeric treatment groups. It was found that turmeric products may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health.

How to use besan and turmeric for oily skin?

To use gram flour and turmeric (haldi) for oily skin, mix besan and turmeric with water or yogurt to form a paste. Apply the paste to you face after cleaning it with a gentle face wash, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

This home remedy can be used 2 to 3 times a week for oily skin, says Dr Kapoor. However, make sure to keep checking how your skin reacts to this home remedy and then adjust the frequency accordingly.

There are other natural ingredients that can be combined with besan and turmeric for oily skin.

  • You can put in honey, which has antibacterial properties, for moisture.
  • Lemon juice can help brighten the skin and further control oil production.
  • Yogurt, which has antibacterial properties, can also work well with gram flour and turmeric.
  • Tomato and lemon juice have citric acid that can help regulate sebum production. This can aid in controlling excess oil in the skin so, mixing these two ingredients with gram flour and turmeric will be beneficial for women with oily skin.

When combined with gram flour and turmeric, these kitchen ingredients can create a more potent and customised treatment for oily skin.

What are the side effects of besan and turmeric face pack?

Possible side effects of using gram flour and turmeric on the skin include staining, especially with turmeric, allergic reactions, or irritation.

To be on a safer side, do a patch test before applying the mixture to your face and stop using this home remedy if you experience any adverse reactions.
