The human brain is considered to be the most delicate part of the body, with the highest functional attributes. Small damage to the nervous system can have a dangerous impact on the overall well-being of a person. Your overall health is the sum of your habits. And some unhealthy lifestyle habits may make you dumb while others help you flourish.

To mark April Fool’s day, we thought of giving you a nudge towards inculcating healthy habits that are bound to keep you miss smarty pants!

Dr Pawan Ojha, Senior Consultant-Neurology, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi spoke to HealthShots about the most dangerous habits that can damage and may actually kill your brain cells.

Here are 5 unhealthy lifestyle habits that make you dumb:

1. Skipping breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and an essential part of your nutrition system. “After a long break for the whole night, your body needs an immediate supply of glucose for different systems to work continuously. When you skip breakfast, it leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the nervous system, eventually causing nerve damage,” says Dr Ojha. Thus, rushing to work without eating food may affect your productivity and make you dumb!

2. Overeating

Consumption of a fatty diet more than a specified limit can cause hardening of the brain arteries, which may block the circulation of oxygenated blood towards the brain. The functioning power of the brain is found to be decreased with increased susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases.

3. Smoking

According to Dr Ojha, “Smoking is the worst of all habits with multiple damaging effects on various organs including the brain.” It can cause your brain to shrink and is a serious risk factor for degenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s Disease.

4. Not sleeping enough

Sleep is important for resting your body, for allowing instant rejuvenation. It repairs cellular damage, restores energy levels and reduces stress. If the body fails to get adequate sleep for a long period of time, it can damage the healthy brain cells.

5. Excess sugar intake

Sugar is found to be one of the leading culprits for every ailment we face in our lives. Studies have found that increased blood sugar level decreases the absorption of nutrients at the cellular level. Brain cells may die and degenerate slowly due to a lack of proper nutrition.
