The new year brings forth an abundance of opportunities, fresh starts, resolutions, and opportunities. It is also just about time that we prepare, plan, and look forward to the coming year with optimism. The uncertainty of the last few years has taught us that it is essential to remain flexible and open-minded in our approach. When we think of new changes and times, it’s natural for all of us to feel some anxiety or stress. We live unaware of the challenges and opportunities that await us, and that can be overwhelming. So then, how to deal with uncertainty?

Health Shots got in touch with Dr. Chandni Tugnait, M.D. (Alternative medicines), psychotherapist, and life and business coach, to know some tips to help you deal with the uncertainty of the new year, and make 2023 a fantastic year instead.

Tips to deal with uncertainty and stress

Here are a few tips to kickstart your new year on a positive note by building the resilience to navigate changes with strength.

1. Reflection

New year is a time for reflection and contemplation of the year gone by and all that it brought. While it can be a great opportunity to look back at our accomplishments or struggles throughout the year, the new year is also an opportunity to contemplate what the coming year could bring. “Taking honest stock of your successes, failures, and challenges from the past year can give insight into what you may wish to accomplish in the new year. Setting specific goals with concrete action plans can help turn lofty ambitions into attainable realities,” says Dr Tugnait. A few moments of quiet reflection at the beginning of a new year can lay out a path towards success, she suggests.

2. Make small changes/improvements

If there are areas of your life that you’d like to improve in 2023, now is an excellent time to start planning it. This is the perfect time to change the trajectory of life with small changes. It could be something small like reorganizing your living space or more extensive like setting up weekly meetings with teams or friends and family members where everyone shares their successes and challenges from the week prior, offering advice and support when necessary. No matter what changes you want to make in 2023, having clear goals will help keep you stay on track throughout the year.

3. Develop resilience and inner strength

Resilience is critical when trying to weather hard times without getting overwhelmed by them. Indulge in activities like yoga or mindfulness practices that will empower you emotionally and provide tools for developing inner strength so that regardless of what comes your way, you stay strong. Seek professional support if you are unable to cope with a gamut of emotions.

4. Beat winter blues with fun activities

As temperatures start to dip during winter, it can be hard not to feel down or stressed out. Beating winter blues doesn’t have to involve expensive activities or complex plans. You can find easy ways for staying active and engaged, indoors. This could include an indoor exercise routine or a new hobby that interests you- like knitting or painting. You could also try reading new books or playing board games with family or friends. Finding creative ways like this throughout winter months can make all the difference in staying positive during uncertain times.
