Throw out the incense & stop the chanting. Here’s what you really need to do to meditate

The mellow sound of a sitar, a dimly lit-up room, fragrant candles, and a girl sitting in a yogic pose with her eyes closed…

We all think alike when it comes to meditation. After all, what we see on TV is what we believe. But here’s the thing: Meditation can be done anytime, anywhere. Even without the perfect ambience.

If you’re thinking of entering the blissful realm of meditation but don’t know where to begin, we’re here to help. Today, we’ll break some myths about meditating, but…

First things first! Let’s get to know the right technique

Yes, meditation has a technique too. But don’t worry–it’s fairly simple. Just follow our lead.

Start by sitting comfortably

Wherever you are, make sure that you are seated comfortably. You can lie down on your bed or sit on your office chair as long as you’re comfortable.

Close your eyes

And no peeking. If you have an eye mask to shut out all light and sight, then that’s even better.

Breathe like you normally do

You don’t need to rush into inhaling and exhaling exercises–that can be tiring. Breathe the way you do, that’s all it takes.

Try to focus

Focus on the movement of your belly. Focus on how you breathe. Think of a happy place. Paint a picture of a house in your head. Do whatever helps you to focus.

Keep at it for 15 to 20 minutes

Try to keep your focus intact for at least 15 minutes. If you have more time on your hands, meditate for longer.

Now, let’s bust some myths!
Meditation is a misunderstood concept, one that is riddled with a whole lot of myths. Here, we bust them for you for a better perspective.

#Myth 1: You HAVE to empty your mind

Naah! You don’t have to. In fact, it’s the opposite–you need to focus on one thought. Try thinking of something you love like mountains or beaches, and stick to it.

#Myth 2: You must sit cross legged to meditate

You don’t need to pose while meditating. You can meditate however you want. Lying on your bed with your eyes closed will also work as long as you don’t doze off. However you want to do it–just remember to take a deep breath and relax.

#Myth 3: You must chant

Nope! Not required. Meditation doesn’t require any chanting or background score. But if it helps you focus, then sure–go for it.

Innumerable apps, pop-culture references, and Insta influencers make meditation seem more complicated than it is. So if you’re beginning your meditation journey, remember: the key is focus. That’s all you need to ace.
