It has been such a crazy life for all of us, ever since covid-19 has made its way into our lives. It has impacted us in so many ways and most of us are battling with our livelihoods physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. We have been impacted in all spheres of our lives and experiencing trauma collectively as a global community.

If covid-19 has taught us anything, it is that we can’t hide from ourselves. We do not have access to our old lives, we can’t run away to our next destination, we can’t drown our stress at bars or bury our heads in highly stressful jobs. Covid-19 has ensured that most of us are confined within our spaces and therefore we have to deal with who we are — including the good, the bad and the not-so-good, because no part is our enemy! However, we do have the opportunity to have a loving relationship with ourselves. It begins by having something to look forward to in the journey of remembering who we are at the core.

Every moment in our lives is a new opportunity to start afresh and become a better version of ourselves. By being present in the moment, we learn to become more mindful of who we truly are. One of the most powerful things I’ve learned in my journey is sticking to a morning routine inspired by mindfulness. There’s something about the harmonious chirping of birds, the fresh smell of flowers in the early morning hours and being able to walk barefoot that helps to keep us grounded and reminds us that we are one with nature.

The morning hours allow us the opportunity to visualise our potential for the day, whilst forgetting about the worries of the past. Here are three empowering tips that you can start practicing to deeply nourish your morning routine and ensure you get the best out of your day:

1. Stillness and silence

Having emails and calendar reminders can suddenly fill your morning with continuous urgency. Does that sound familiar? If you want to take advantage of your morning routine, find solace in the silence and tranquility that comes with being one with nature, perhaps even by meditating. Silence can be an empowering experience that most of us take for granted, because we are so used to the fast-paced world and all the distractions that come with having technology.

Greet your body with deep breaths and silence, and avoid the temptation of wanting to look through your phone. Practice healthy boundaries such as switching off your gadgets for longer periods and placing them away from you, so that it is out of your reach for a while.

2. Say ‘yes’ to your body, mind and soul

Whilst some of us may prefer a heavy dose of caffeine in the morning, try out a refreshing energiser such as lemon water with salt to get your day started. Eating and drinking wholesome meals with liquids throughout the day ensures that our bodies get nourished. Additionally, just like our bodies need to be fed, so do our minds and our inner-selves. The ability to take a step back and become more self-aware of our presence allows us to become accepting, loving and kinder to ourselves. Every time you pass by the mirror, look at yourself and speak to the body parts that you like about yourself and even the ones you don’t like, give yourself a smile, and be thankful for who you are in your entirety. Once you’ve acknowledged the beauty that lies within you, being sexy and brilliant becomes second nature!

3. Create your own routine

Maybe waking up at 4 am might not be your preferred starting point, but waking up at 11am may work out perfectly fine. Maybe an early morning jog does not sound attractive to you but doing yoga in your PJs is your perfect start! In your attempts to create a mindful morning routine, it is important to understand what works for you and what doesn’t. Find your balance! You want to make the best out of your routine by channeling your identity and being able to find a moment of peace, where the daily stresses of life are not in your radar. It’s all about you – that means you are in control of how you want your routine to work best for you, your body, your mind and your soul.
