It’s such a wonderful time for us cinema freaks, because there’s so much content being produced! Whether it’s the diversity in subjects or the quality of films and shows being churned, everything today is top-notch. But why is it then that we keep going back to our favourite shows and films? Most of you would have noticed that this pattern has been more prominent, especially during the pandemic. So, is there a reason or is it a sheer coincidence? Psychology has the answer for this. When we watch familiar content (especially with a decent ending), we experience a sense of security. That’s because we are also struggling with uncertainty at this point, and it provides us with control in certain ways.

The best part is you don’t have to deal with any sort of anxiety, especially because you know what’s going to happen! It could be reruns of Friends or sitting with a tub of ice-cream, as you let the SRK mania take over you. Let’s just say it comforts us and how!

Here are some reasons why you should watch the same old shows and movies again:
1. It helps us regulate our emotions

As mentioned above, we are living a life full of uncertainty. There are apprehensions about job security, and on the other hand, meeting our loved ones seems like a distant dream. Watching your favourite content makes you feel a little normal. Sometimes, it also revives old memories in a positive manner, and makes you happier than you could have ever imagined. So, don’t even think! Just put on comfy clothes, eat your favourite foods, and enjoy your favourite shows or movies.

2. They can offer predictability and safety

Once again, watching the content you already love feels like a warm hug! You already know what your favourite characters are up to, and that feeling of knowing what’s going to happen next just makes you feel so safe, amid all the uncertainty. As they say, predictability can sometimes do wonders!

3. They require less mental energy

Oh, yes! Imagine having to watch something new, and being so involved to figure out what’s happening? Well, that’s not bad in any way, but do we really want to exhaust ourselves, when we are already physically and emotionally drained? No, right? So, this is the best option we feel! You could also have a movie marathon; the more, the merrier!

4. They bring back happy memories of the first time we watched them

Every movie or song we watch brings back memories, right? And let’s just say we pick our favourite content, based on how it made us feel when we saw it for the first time. So, how about walking down memory lane? It’s the most beautiful way to go back in time, and make yourself feel happy. We think it’s a great idea!
