Meeting new people is always exciting, isn’t it? There’s a lot to bond over, but if there’s one thing that connects people instantly, it is music. You might share love for a musician or your favourite song, and that’s how you hit it off in a go. At other times, you might not like a person, just because you do not agree with their taste in music. And how is it related, you may ask? This is because the kind of music you listen to tells a lot about your mental health, and personality!

Yes, music is an integral part of our lives: we just can’t do without it! Since your taste in music differs from others, does that reveal something about your state of mind? It’s time to find out.

Does your music playlist reveal your state of mind?
Yes, it does. A study published in the journal Australasian Psychiatry found strong links between various genres of music and behavioural patterns, suicidal thoughts, and drug use.

The study also observed that music preference is indicative of emotional vulnerability. While several other studies have found a correlation between music preference and mental health, there is a need for more research to determine if the music preference of people diagnosed with mental health issues varies from general population, or not.

Senior author, Professor Elvira Brattico, who has been quoted in a study published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, says, “There’s a link between music listening styles and mPFC(medial prefrontal cortex) activation, which could mean that certain listening styles have long-term effects on the brain.”
